This last year, probably the closeness of  Yuma Co., Arizona.

Overall: San Francisco going for Al Smith, despite Hoover being a Bay Area namesake and thus taking the other 9 counties comfortably. The other remaining Smith counties were Dixie North counties.
Esmeralda County, NV, which voted for Bush over Perot in 1992 by a single vote.
Also Lapeer County, MI, which Bush carried in 1992 with just 35% of the vote.
Marquette County, MI (in the UP) went Ford '76 - Carter '80 - Reagan '84 -- each time by less than 1 percentage point.

In 1976, Arenac County, MI voted for Carter over Ford by 8 votes out of 5423 votes cast.
In 2004, Arenac County, MI voted for Kerry over Bush by 5 votes out of 8216 votes cast.

In 2004, Bush won Pinellas County, FL by 226 votes out of 455,357 votes cast.

In Winston County, AL, in 1932 FDR beat Hoover by 1 vote. It was one of only 2 times going back to 1904 that Winston went Dem, the other time being 1976.
