Hillary Clinton outduels Barack Obama in the Democratic Primaries and selects Tom Vilsack as her running mate.

Fred Thompson bothers to run a serious campaign and by winning the Iowa Caucus and South Carolina Primary to knock out Huckabee, then winning the most states on Super Tuesday to knock out McCain, he outlasts Mitt Romney, knocking Romney out by winning the Texas primary. He selects Michael Bloomberg as his running mate.

Who wins? Does not having Obama on the ballot affect the results? Does a pro-choice GOP running mate (Bloomberg) change anything?

Bloomberg would be as bad of a running mate as Palin electorally, if not even worse, for different reasons:

1. His Pro-Choice stance would hurt GOP base turnout in important swing states

2. He's associated with NYC, and thus Wall St., which even in this indirect way ties him to the recession.

I think Hillary would lose North Carolina since she wouldn't excite black voters like Obama did. I'm not sure she'd make up for it in her (relative) strength in Appalachian district like Heath Shuler's.

I also think that without McCain, Arizona is closer? Perhaps WV is also close.

This, but flip West Virginia, Georgia, and Missouri. I imagine Arizona and Kentucky are quite close.
