3% unemployment is not really even a good thing.

Agreed. Anything short of full employment is a bad thing for workers.

Not really sure a region he barely won deserves to be called his "base," even if it was his most impressive pickup/reason for sneaking into the White House.

His base (older white men) is very prominent in the Rust Belt.

Is it a coincidence Pennsylvania is the only one of those states with a Democratic Governor? I think Not!

More fake news.  Unemployment in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio are at 20 year lows.  Look at the graphs.  https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/WIUR

I have no idea what is going on in Pennsylvania and why they aren't at full employment.  Maybe it's the Democrat Governor's fault.

Excuse me, but how is this fake news?  I checked the OP's figures against the FRED site you posted, and they are almost entirely correct.  The only minor difference is that Michigan's 3.7% was in July, not June (it was 3.8% in June).

Unemployment is not on the rise.  Look at the graphs.  Or open your eyes to all the help wanted signs, everyone is hiring.  Everyone who wants a job has a job or will have one soon.

Pennsylvania is the only state on the list that *isn't* booming.  The PA unemployment rate is above the national average and stagnant.  I guess if you are a Trump hater you would see that as a "bright spot."

Ohio -- which *is* on the list -- has a higher unemployment rate than Pennsylvania.  You do understand that 5.1 is higher than 4.7?

Ohio's unemployment rate is lower than it has been in 17 years.  And *not* on the rise.

But yes, like PA it is still above the national average.

In other words, May/June were purposely selected to lead the reader to the conclusion that the Midwestern employment situation is getting precipitously worse, whereas if you instead use January-October 2017 as your window, you see:

Indiana 3.9% (was 4.0%)
Michigan 4.5% (was 5.2%)
Ohio 5.1% (was 5.0%)
Wisconsin 3.4% (was 3.9%)
Pennsylvania 4.7% (was 5.2%)

Yay! I too can cherry-pick data!

He was too busy then with the inauguration crowds. No time for small-time distractions like economic policy.

The economy is still good.   The overall unemployment rate is very good.  What this data shows is that there has been a minor uptick over a few months in the states mentioned.  Maybe this means nothing at all; at low unemployment rates, it's normal for the number to bounce around a little bit.  (It can't keep getting lower forever, obviously.)

Check again in 6 months.  If it's still trending upward then it might well be an indication of some weakening in the economy; if not, it's just noise.
