California currently.

However California is much more polarized. Massachusetts doesn't have any Modoc County type places. This is why Massachusetts has an all-Democratic congressional delegation and Democrats have always managed county sweeps in presidential elections.

Massachusetts. Historically, it's been a solid blue state since 1928. California has only had that trend since 1992.

I’d say CA is bluer in terms of social liberalism and straight-ticket Democratic voting, while MA is bluer in terms of economic populism and historical Democratic performance (only time between 1948 and 1988 that CA voted Dem was Goldwater’s landslide loss, while MA was the only McGovern state as well as a Carter/Dukakis state).

California has the greater number of POC, who are the most loyal Democratic constituent. The white Democrats in Massachusetts are prone to vote for Republicans on the local level and occasionally a Scott Brown on the federal level. California is the bluer state and the one that reflects the base of the party.
