2003: RICHARDS RAMPS UP AGENDA
BIN LADEN KILLED, CUOMO APPOINTED DNC CHAIR
After the 2002 midterm elections, President Ann Richards re-focused the nation's military efforts on finding Bin Laden and capturing or killing top Al-Qaeda targets instead of pursuing sustained strategic strikes across Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Republicans in Congress have been pushing Richards and her administration to look at targets in Iraq and abroad, in combating what they have dubbed as "radical warped Islamic terror."
In early 2003, Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. Andrew Cuomo, the new DNC Chair and former Richards Chief of Staff attributed this victory to "President Richards' laser-like focus on getting the job done."
Meanwhile, President Richards decided to spend much of 2003 trying to grow the green economy, including protecting public lands. This includes moratoriums on drilling and other public works projects. This agenda has come under strong scrutiny from the GOP, who insists that Richards should instead pursue offshore drilling.
