Much has been made of Bernie's appeal to WWC voters, but I'm curious as to why Hillary Clinton still carried places like Fayette County, PA and Jefferson County, OH? Was it really attributable to otherwise-Sanders voters crossing over for Trump?

She lost both of those places... Obama lost Fayette and only narrowly won Jefferson by about a hundred votes.

I will let others speak as to the Democratic Primary results in the Midwest and "Rust Belt".

What I can and will say, is that in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington) when one looks at precinct and municipal level results, is that Bernie Sanders dusted HRC in the Counties and Cities in WWC Oregon and Washington.

HRC's best precincts in the PAC NW were generally in wealthier areas such as West Portland, North Eugene, and certainly not in places such as Columbia County, Toledo, Longview, etc....

Perhaps not coincidentally, some of the biggest areas where we saw major swings towards HRC in the PAC NW were in these same communities, and those in which we saw some of the biggest swings towards Trump in the 2016 General Election.

PA was a closed primary. And Bernie wanted to ban fracking.

OH was weird due to indys voting for Kasich.

For example in eastern Ohio, I think HRC's strength there in the primaries is explained by Democrats simply leaving and moving to vote for Trump in the GOP primary. Same for many WWC areas; Bernie was a bit hurt by Trump having overlapping appeal.
