What should the Age of Consent Be ?

I think Iowa has a good law.  16 is the age of consent, but there is a "Romeo and Juliet" provision that protects people within 3 years or something like that (a 16-year old kid will not be a sex offender for having sex with his 14-year old girlfriend).

I think 16, but we really need to seriously modernize our laws these issues. Two 14-year-olds sexting each other shouldn't warrant sex offender status. Those laws have gone too far. Sex offender status should be reserved for true sexual predators.

There shouldn't be a single age of consent, but a moving one based on age difference (for example, a 17-year-old with a 19-year-old is far less objectionable than an 18-year-old with a 40-year-old).

Is there any evidence that having sex with someone who is 40 or so is harmful or so when you're 20-22? These laws were made to protect children from adults wanting to abuse them, but I don't really think someone in his/her early 20s needs protection from these kind of things and I also don't think we should abuse these laws to ram societal standards through people's throats.

Interestingly, Mississippi (until recently) enforced different legal ages of consent for men (13) and women (16).  The age was recently raised to 16 for boys as well following a pretty high-profile story where a gay pedophile ring was uncovered on the Mississippi Gulf Coast around 20 years ago.

It should be the same age for both. I don't want to hear about all this "equality" business if you're going to brand a man a rapist and put him in jail for something that it would be fine for a woman to do.
