Let's not leave George and Clemenceau out.

Buchanan was so insanely terrible his administration (the Secretary of War being a future Confederate general) was literally emptying federal armouries of cannon and sending them over to the seceding states. The modern day equivalent would be like if Trump's SecDef was an ISIS supporter who was secretly supplying terrorist cells with surface-to-air missiles. That's how bad Buchanan was even before you get into other stuff, like inappropriately leaning on the SCOTUS to make Dred Scott aka by far the worst decision in the court's history. His pure awfulness will never be surpassed.

Out of the Presidents listed:

1. James Buchanan
2. Franklin Pierce
3. Millard Fillmore
4. Warren Harding
5. Herbert Hoover (in addition to being an ineffective President, Hoover was a bigot and pushed the Republican Party to adopt an early version of the “Southern Strategy”)
6. Richard Nixon
7. George W. Bush (Bush was at least an honorable person despite being an ineffective President)

It’s too early to judge Donald Trump, but I feel that hisorians will rank him in the bottom 5 or 10 on their lists of US Presidents.

Pierce or Buchanan (normal, sane not a left-wing hack).

Why is every president here after Buchanan a Republican?  Carter was objectively the worst president of the past 50 years.

"Not a hack"

"Not a hack"

"Carter was objectively the worst president of the past 50 years"

- He came into office in a time of economic recovery and left office with the economy in a double dip recession AND experiencing double digit inflation

- Failed to stop Khomeini from taking over Iran which led to the Iran hostage crises

- Did nothing to prevent the Soviets from invading Afghanistan

- Many Latin American US allies fall to communist rebels

I don’t see how that record is anything but a disaster
