Gameplay Thread

Prime Minister Jacqueline Mulbridge, who led a grand coalition of technocrats, following the 2008 global economic crash, for the past ten years, announced her retirement from politics, and a return to political normalcy. Despite her personal popularity, her Democratic Labour Party has weakened in the polls.

The other political parties of Lamarna has seized the opportunity to lead the country in the first truly competitive election in a decade.

Each day, a candidate is able to perform two events, morning and evening. The possible options:
- Rally [give a speech in a certain location]
- Interview [send me a message you want one, and I'll send you a question]
- Party function [necessary to strengthen backbench support]
- Fundraiser [necessary to cut ads or improve infrastructure]
- Cut ads [radio, television, or internet]
- Improve infrastructure [invest in a constitutency or city and hire managers, canvassers, etc.]
- Endorsement rally [contact me for approval]
- Special events [Will be announced]
- Rest [necessary, or else chance of gaffes will increase]

Releasing statements does not use up a day's event. Additionally, candidates may commission private polling, for a fee. Every candidate begins with a small amount of funds.

Anthony Milton Accepts LGBTEENS' Endorsement for 2018 Election
Anthony Milton on stage at Brennanhaven
Thank you! Thank you so much! Thank you!

When I was a boy in Neukiel, my best friend growing up was named Brian. He lived three doors down from me, with his dad. His mom had died when he was young. He had a little sister named Crystal. We played rugby together as kids. We went to school. When I got a Nintendo system, he was over at my house every day for hours playing it with me.

When we started highschool at Tanno Lalle'e High, I noticed Brian acting differently. He was more withdrawn, more quiet. One day, when we were walking home from school, I asked him what was wrong. He started crying. We sat down on the curb. He told me that he was gay, and he was scared. Because he'd heard people at school making gay jokes. Because he saw what was going on in the news. Because he heard about the "gay cancer" - AIDS. He was scared he was going to end up alone.

I was taken aback. At that time, I had never known a gay person. I never knew that Brian was gay. But I loved him like the brother I never had. I stood him up and hugged him. We walked home. I watched him go into his house. We waved.

That was the last time I saw him alive.

That night, Brian came out to his father. His father rejected him, and told him to get out the next morning. Instead, Brian hanged himself in his room.

That next day was the worst day of my life. School was a daze. His sister, Crystal, was nearly catatonic with grief. She didn't speak for a week. I visited her at her aunt's house. That's when she spoke her first words since her brother's death. She looked at me and told me "never again."

Never again.

The next day, me, Crystal and some of our friends met after school in John Mueller's classroom. That was the first meeting of the organization known as LGBTEENS.

14 people grew to 30, grew to 100, grew to 500. And now here we are, thousands of us, together in this arena, coming together to declare in one voice: never again!

I look around this arena and I know that Brian would think that this is pretty cool.

And it is with Brian's memory etched firmly in my mind that on behalf of the Socialist Party I accept LGBTEENS' endorsement for the 2018 election.

My friends, we've made huge strides since that day in Mr. Mueller's class. But we still have much work to be done. Lamarna has fallen woefully behind on LGBTQ rights compared to the our allies around the world. Australia just legalized same-sex marriage a few months ago.

My friends, it's time.

The first priority of a Socialist government will be the full enactment of same-sex marriage nationwide, because for too long the queer community has been subjected to separate-but-equal status in a nation that supposedly values all. The time has come for our civic institutions to move into the 21st century.

But our discrimination laws have to move forward, too. No one should be fired or denied a service or treated poorly because of something they cannot control. Which is why a Socialist government will move to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the Anti Discrimination Act.

We need these things, so no one ever has to go through the heartbreak Crystal went through. We need these things, so that LGBTQ youth are no longer 75% more likely to commit suicide, or 48% more likely to end up homeless and 85% more likely drug addicted, so that LGBTQ youth no longer feel unsafe at home or at school. So they are no more made to feel like they are bad people because of who they are.

We've made great progress, and this organization has been at the forefront of that progress. But we still have a long way to go. But if the people in this building stay together, and work together to make Lamarna and the world a better place, we cannot be defeated.

Thank you all! Long live Lamarna!

The LGBTEENS rally was Milton's evening event for May 7. Milton rested in the morning, but did travel to Neukiel to visit his father's and his friend Brian's graves.

Mana'ea Homeless Crises
The Thompson campaign makes a stop at Mana'ea

Lei Thompson is approached by a reporter

Lei Thompson and her team made an unannounced stop in Mana'ea today, May 7th, to help out with the current homeless crises that has arisen in the surrounding area. A reporter was able to get a hold of the parliament member while she was handing out supplies.

Helping the homeless in Mana'ea was Thompson's event for May 7th. It was her morning event and she spent the evening watching the Brennanhaven rally on TV from her house as she was unable to make it in time.

If I'm reading the rules correctly, each turn is a week in game-time and 3 days in real-time.

Well, in that case:

May 8 Morning: Anthony Milton speaks to high school students at Tanno Lalle'e High School in Neukiel, his alma mater, with the Socialist Party candidate in the Neukiel constituency and several Socialist Neukiel City Councilors (party function).

May 8 Evening: Anthony Milton attends Socialist Party fundraiser.

May 9: Anthony Milton attends Nellie Hedrock's funeral. He gave a brief eulogy:

Today, our country and our world is just a little bit dimmer, a little bit colder without her smile, her guidance and her heart. But her impact will live on in all of us forever. And it is up to us, the Children of the Revolution, to make the Mother proud.

May 10 Morning: Anthony Milton hosts all Constituency and List candidates at the Socialist Party's Headquarters, Mendelssohn House, to discuss strategy (party function).

May 10 Evening: Anthony Milton Rally in Atibye:

Only the Socialist Party can deliver the change this area desperately needs. Only the Socialist Party and its allies have a plan to rejuvenate this area by focusing on renewable energy. Offshore wind power would produce thousands of jobs here on Ka' Lai Island. Only the Socialist Party has a manifesto putting the many before the few.

May 11 Morning: Anthony Milton has an interview with the Lamarna Journal

May 11 Evening: Anthony Milton attends Prime Minister Mulbridge's retirement party.

May 12 Morning: Anthony Milton cuts an ad, talking about the homeless crisis in Mana'ea.

May 12 Evening: Anthony Milton rests, taking his children to a movie.

May 13 Morning: Anthony Milton hires a campaign manager for the Socialist Party's candidate in Arcadia Port, a popular local newspaper columnist.

May 13 Evening: Anthony Milton holds a rally in Morganville.

I know the people of this area feel forgotten and left behind. But the solution is not to blame immigrants. The solution is to reinvest in our communities. Big corporations have had the run of the roost for far too long, and a Socialist government will put an end to that. The Nationalists and the New Alliance seek to make it easier for those big business to operate. They say it'll create jobs. Their methods have proven time and time again to have failed. The only way to create jobs is to protect the existing ones with a union. The only way to increase wages is through a union. The Nationalists and New Alliance want to make it harder for you to organize, to stand up for your God given rights. A Socialist government will say "no more!"

Last year I was a rookie lawyer shoehorned into a contest that I never dreamed I could win. Now, I'm a Member of the Larmarna Parliament for this district! I won narrowly last year, and am looking improve on that this year. I am formally declaring my intention to stand for re-election in my constituency this year!

I feel I wouldn't be up here without my sister Robyn, who introduced me to the world of politics. To Anthony Milton, the Leader of our party, you were the one who inspired me to get into politics. To the love of my life Leliana, I would be nowhere without your boundless love and support. To the rest of you, I ask that you support me and the Socialist Party in our bid for an equal Lamarna!

Alfie Almighty: Morgan Announces National Party Leadership Bid

Morganville North MP Alfie Morgan at his announcement conference
May 7, 2018

Thank you. Thank you all.

Brothers and sisters of Lamarna, I stand with you today on an eve of somber memorial. Two days from now, as well you all know, the people of our nation will see to rest our brightest star and most unerring advocate, a woman without whom the Lamarna we love so dearly would have never come to be. As we gather today, we face the unhappy reality of going forward without the guiding hand of our Mother - a grim task, to be sure, but one to which we are obliged as citizens of Lamarna.

In Nellie's name, we move forward - our heads raised and our eyes ever on the horizon - on the waves of an unknown future, as it has always been.

Brothers and sisters, friends of the National Party, and fellow patriots, Lamarna stands today at the head of a great crossroads. As I speak to you now, the long shadows of poverty, exploitation, and international turmoil darken our doorstep. Our economy is faltering, our rural towns and villages failing and collapsing, and our industry leaving our borders. Foreign powers - as they have done for decades - alternate between exploiting our resources, offloading their spillover on our shores, and threatening our very extinction. All the while, Prime Minister Mulbridge - for all her good intentions and and well-meaning preachery about a "Great Coalition" - has proven herself categorically inept at rising to the challenges which face us.

My fellow citizens and patriots, of Morganville and Lamarna, this must not be allowed to continue. Great and meaningful change is long overdue, for our nation - and for our party.

For nearly two years, I have done my duty as a patriot and stalwart of the National Party. I have supported and helped to guide our leader through enacting his vision for our Party in the wake of our poor showings under previous leadership. For his efforts at rebuilding party infrastructure, I give my right honorable colleague due respect and accolades. However, the time has come for a new vision - a working vision for all Lamarnans, from shore to shore, city to city, village to village.

My friends, I hereby announce my candidacy for the leadership of the National Party.

May 7 Evening: Riding the launch of his campaign, MP Morgan holds a fundraising event in his home constituency of Morganville North. A good half of his expansive family are in attendance, including his wheelchair-bound father.

May 8 Morning: Morgan rests ahead of a busy week, enjoying a classy breakfast and an uncharacteristically quiet morning with his family in their Morganville home.

May 8 Evening: MP Morgan plays host to a conference of National Party donors and party leaders at his family home, pitching his vision for the future (party function).

May 9: MP Morgan attends Nellie Hedrock's funeral, sharing a childhood memory of his great-grandfather, the long-deceased Alastair Cormag Morgan, in Hedrock's honor:
"My great-grandfather passed just a few months after Lamarna won her independence. I suppose he figured, after such a charmed life, he had seen enough excitement for one lifetime. About a week or so prior, he told me, "My boy, no matter what may come of it, a new day has dawned on our little corner of the world."
If Mad Alfie Morgan ever was right about one thing, it was that. And what a new day it has been.
God rest Nellie Hedrock. May we never forsake her memory or lose sight of her legacy."

May 10 Morning: MP Morgan spearheads a recruiting event in Pryne and Althur, aimed specifically at drawing in and energizing new, young voters going forward (party function).

May 10 Evening: Capping off a day of groundwork, Morgan hires a campaign director in Pryne and Althur, a respected harbor manager.

May 11 Morning: Following a chartered puddle-jumper flight back to his home city, MP Morgan attends the opening of a new shipyard in Morganville East, delivering the keynote speech to the attending sailors and dockworkers in an impromptu rally:
"Never let naysayers and globalists cast it into doubt: Lamarna's economic future will be won on the backs of our ships and our industry!"

May 11 Evening: The Morgan campaign launches its first radio ad in the southern islands, aimed at striking up economic hope and patriotism in poverty-stricken Mālno voters.
"Charity has its place, but it is the height of idiocy to give food and shelter to foreign waywards when we can barely feed and shelter our own people. Make no mistake: under a National Party government, Lamarnan needs will be put before any other."

May 12 Morning: Morgan holds a fundraiser in Victoriana, aimed at bringing in individual donations.

May 12 Evening: MP Morgan launches his second radio ad, this time discussing the need to pull out of "exploitative trade agreements" and revitalize the Lamarnan shipping industry, in a bid to rally support among National Party stalwarts in the northern islands.

May 13 Morning: Morgan holds a rally in Keln's Harbour, emphasizing the points touched upon in his recent ad campaigns.
"For too long have we allowed foreign superpowers to exploit our resources and take advantage of our goodwill without at least demanding a fair take in return. We may not be a large nation, but we are a proud one - far too proud to allow the rest of the world to steal our industry and our jobs and then walk over us at the negotiating table. In order to revitalize our economy, three things must be done.
First, we must immediately and completely renegotiate our current trade agreements. If a deal cannot be made in favor of Lamarnan industry, we must withdraw.
Second, we must end the our intake of Filipino refugees and seriously reevaluate our immigration policy. Perhaps we can change our tune on altruism sometime in the future, but there is no sense in giving resources to foreign arrivals that we could be using to remedy the starvation and homelessness in our rural Mālno villages.
Finally, we must end the outsourcing of Lamarnan jobs for the sake of cheap labor. We can accomplish this by incentivizing investment in industry on the homefront, by rewarding local businesses which opt to stay in Lamarna, and by levying stiff penalties against companies which engage in outsourcing."

May 13 Evening: Gearing up for a campaign on healthcare, MP Morgan cuts a sizable donation to Keln Harbour's largest hospital and hires one of its board members as his local campaign manager.

Interview with Anthony Milton, May 10.

The Lamarna Journal:

"Union leaders have recently expressed their discontent with the leftward shift of the Socialist Party on social issues, explaining that many of their members fundamentally disagree with the party's positions. They say that you are losing touch with the core constituency of your party. Are their concerns legitimate? Would you change your party's stances on these issues to assuage their fears?"

The Socialist Party’s stance on social issues is non-negotiable. Our party has always fought for the inalienable rights of the Lamarnan people, and it will always be at the forefront of that fight. The other left-wing parties share our positions on LGBTQ rights and immigration. I think the workers of this country know that those who seek to divide us along social lines do not have the working people’s best interest at heart; indeed, they support the disastrous trade policies that have economically stagnated Lamarna, or oppose our plans to put thousands of Lamarnans back to work with investments in renewable energy, or they oppose increasing funding for adult education so that people can create a better opportunity for themselves. The Socialist Party and its allies represent all Lamarnans, and we know that our unity as a nation cannot be shaken.

It is natural, however, to have slight disagreements in policy. You don’t need to agree with us on everything to think we’re the best party to lead Lamarna. We frequently have arguments in our own caucus on issues. But it’s unquestionable that the Socialists stand up for the rights and dignity of all people. Workers rights and social liberalism are not mutually exclusive; rather they go hand-in-hand. It was trade unions who led the emancipation of the Mālno in the 19th century. Trade unions will lead us forward again. Lamarna can’t work if don’t all work together.

Lei Thompson out with campaign managers: Jack Greene (left) and Stephanie Huerta (right).
Schedule:
May 7 Morning: Lei Thompson and her campaign brings donations to Mana’ea in order to help out with the homeless crisis. They give blankets, water, food, and clothes to those in need and found temporary housing for those unable to find shelter. (Campaign stop).

May 7 Night: Lei Thompson stayed home with her boyfriend and watched Anthony Milton’s endorsement rally on tv. (Rest).

May 8 Morning: Lei Thompson sat down for an interview with Mana'ea Post-Gazette, discussing how the Ocean and Sky party differs from the Socialist party and the actions her team took the previous day on trying to end the homeless crisis.

May 8 Evening: Lei Thompson hires two campaign managers: Stephanie Huerta for areas in the southern islands such as Thompson’s home of A’Kapui, and surrounding areas such as Mana’ea, Makalpui, and Marswick, and Jack Greene for the northern islands such as Victoriana, Alberton Kendall Park, Alberton Carlotta, and Morganville East.

May 9: Lei Thompson attended Nellie Hedrock’s funeral, giving a short eulogy:
Ms. Hedrock will go down in history as one of the most important political figures in Lamarna. The work she has done will forever be a landmark for the rights of women and equality between the genders. We as citizens of Lamarna will forever be indebted to her. This loss of such an amazing life hurts, it hurts a lot, but we have to hold our heads high as we watch a new era dawn upon us.

May 10 Morning: Lei Thompson hosted an Ocean and Sky party brunch in Alberton Carlotta, the goal being to aim towards donors for the Democratic Labour party. (Party function).

May 10 Evening: Lei Thompson hosted an Ocean and Sky fundraiser in Alberton Kendall Park.

May 11 Morning: Lei Thompson held a short rally in Morganville West commemorating Prime Minister Mulbridge's career:
As all of you know, Prime Minister Mulbridge is having her retirement party tonight. For the past decade she has guided this country in the fallout of the global economic crash of 2008, and has shown amazing leadership since. Our prime minister’s legacy will stand the test of time for sure. With the funeral of Nellie Hedrock behind us, and the retirement of Jacqueline Mulbridge before us, it is clear that we are at the end of an era. The dawn of a new day is on the horizon, and we have to be prepared for it! We must usher in this new era correctly, continuing on the legacy of the leaders before us and adapting to whatever struggles encounter us.

May 11 Evening: Lei Thompson attended Prime Minister Jacqueline Mulbridge’s retirement party.

May 12 Morning: Lei Thompson goes out for breakfast and walks her dog, Scruffy, in the park. (Rest).

May 12 Evening: Lei Thompson cut her first ad, a television ad, discussing the Ocean and Sky party and driving the idea that the Ocean and Sky Party is a “hand’s on” party for the Lamarnan people:
There is nothing more critical right now than the decisions we make. We cannot make mistakes on the path we want to set Lamarna on. Do we want another four years of no change and powerful elitist? Do we want even higher records of income inequality? Do we want to continue to discriminate against refugees and immigrants? Do we want to continue with our medieval views on same-sex marriage? Do we want to continue to disregard the cries of our climate? I don’t think so, and that’s why the Ocean and Sky party, is the party for you. I’m Lei Rodriguez, and I approve this message.

May 13 Morning: Lei Thompson held a rally in A’Kapui. She used the rally to back up her credentials:
Now I know many people are saying, ‘what is an actress doing leading a political party?’ ‘What does she know, she’s just an actress?’ ‘Oh, that Lei Thompson, she’s just a socialist in disguise.’ Well, I’ve served in parliament for two years as a socialist, and now I’m here leading the Ocean and Sky party. I’m ready to bring us to the next level. The Lamaran people have been left behind for too long. I’ve struggled and I have fought my way from being just a girl from here in A’Kapui to having my career, and I will struggle and fight for you too. We have had enough of the richest of the rich getting richer and everyone else being left behind. It is a time for change, and I am ready to bring that change.

May 13 Evening: Lei Thompson cut an internet ad, aimed towards the northern islands, about how unjust social conservatism is and that Lamarna should be far ahead in such issues as LGBT rights, etc.

Where does the Conservative Party have the most potential for support?

The South is, in general, much more economically left than the rest of the county while being socially moderate.

Alberton has a mix, but is rather cosmopolitan in its beliefs. Sunderland is a bourgeoius suburb, while Morganville has a strong working class tradition.

Suburbs, in general, are more economically liberal. Urban areas differ economically, but usually socially liberal.

The far Northern Islands used to be Labour strongholds but have shifted toward the National Party lately.

This doesn't quite explain which areas are socially conservative.

"I'm pleased to have the endorsement of Socialist Youth this year. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was part of that group of extraordinary people, those people that got my attention focused on building an economic system that works for all, creating a more open society, making a great nation even greater.

Building a free nation has always been an ideal of mine. The revolution, the civil war, two painful moments in our history that made our nation stronger than ever. We now need to look to the future, and the Socialist Party represents the best chance for our country to move forward. I'm proud to have the endorsement of Socialist Youth, the organisation that represents the future for our party. Thank you."

Turn 2: May 14 - May 20

National Polling:
New Alliance - 22% (+2)
Socialist Party
- 21% (+1)
National Party - 15% (+1)
Ocean and Sky - 11% (+3)
Republican Party - 9% (-2)
Democratic Labour Party - 8% (-2)
Progress. - 4% (-3)
Conservative Party - 4% (+1)
Anticap Action - 3% (-1)

National Party Leadership Polling:
Andrew Merrill
- 46% (-10)
Alfie Morgan - 45% (+45)

Headlines/News:

The campaign cycle began with the party leaders rushing out the door.

The Socialist backbench reaffirmed their support of party leader Anthony Milton's socially liberal agenda; it appears as if the interview in the Lamarna Journal cemented their confidence. However, it is uncertain whether it had a positive impact on the worries of the workers.

MP Hannigan said, "Michael would one day make a fine PM."

Retiring Democratic Labour MP for Victoriana, Bertie Hannigan, crossed party lines on May 14th to endorse Michael Henderson for reelection.

Vogue Paris profiled Lei Thompson over the weekend, proclaiming her "a new warrior for the oppressed." The magazine is widely distributed throughout Lamarna, and received very well. Many acclaim the magazine's covering of Thompson's work in the Mana'ea homeless shelters.

Alfie Morgan's leadership challenge to Andrew Merrill is well-received by the public; however, so far, no National MP has defected to support him. However, Leader Merrill's silence on the challenge is troubling to many.

New Alliance leader William Esser's speech in Keln's Harbour is widely lauded as a magnificent demonstration of patriotism and emotion.

May 14 Morning: Anthony Milton meets with the women harassed by refugees in Kendall Park. Afterwards, he releases a statement saying "What happened in Kendall Park is a disgrace. I hope the good men and women of the Lamarna Police Force capture these depraved individuals, and I hope they are prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law, including deportation."

May 14 Evening: Anthony Milton attends a rally in Mana'ea.

I want to thank my good friend Lei Thompson for bringing the homeless crisis in this area to the forefront of the Lamarnan consciousness. We cannot have a functioning society if we look down our noses at those suffering the most. That's why I'm pleased to announce the Socialist plan for housing: 25,000 new housing units throughout the country, including Mana'ea. This plan will create jobs and more importantly create homes for those who are without. I was talking to a 12-year-old girl and her mother today, right before I came out on this stage. Her mother works three jobs and still doesn't provide enough to live in permanent housing. For the last six months, her family's lived out of their car. That is a disgrace! We live in the greatest country in the world, with more than enough wealth to go around! The Socialists will provide universal housing, because that it was the citizens of our great nation deserve. If we don't accomplish this, what are we in politics for?

May 15 Morning: Cut ads in Neukiel

May 15 Evening: Socialists, including Anthony Milton, sit down with the Alberton mayor to discuss mass transit [party function].

May 16 Morning: Hired campaign managers for Neukiel and Green Arch.

May 16 Evening: Attended his parent-teacher conferences at his children's school (rest).

May 17 Morning: Interview

May 17 Evening: Cut ads in Pali

May 18 Morning: Rally in Marswick.

"For too long, the economic potential of the Southern Islands has been untapped, ignored by political elites from the North. That's why the Socialist Party is focusing its energy plan on the Southern Islands. There's plenty of space for new power plants, new wind turbines, new solar panels on the Southern Islands. This part of the country has been ignored for generations. A Socialist government will say 'no more!'"

May 18 Evening: Leaders' debate

May 19 Morning: Invests in infrastructure in Marswick and Blacksburg.

May 19 Evening: Attends a fundraiser in Blacksburg

May 20 Morning: Hosts retiring Socialists MPs at his Alberton home (party function).

May 20 Evening: Goes canvassing in Arcadia Port (party function).
