Howard Stern elected Governor of New York

THE NEW YORK TIMES – Radio host Howard Stern has been elected Governor of New York in a surprise victory. The New York Times projects Mr. Stern will receive 37.6% of the vote, ousting incumbent Governor Mario Cuomo, who had been leading in polls until very recently. Mr. Cuomo is projected to receive 34.5%, and Republican nominee George Pataki, who initially had good prospects but lost a large amount of support to Mr. Stern, received only 25.9%. Other candidates accounted for a combined 2%.

Mr. Stern announced his candidacy in March and received the Libertarian nomination in April. He slowly rose in the polls, overtaking Mr. Pakati by July. In September, Mr. Stern merged his campaign with that of Independence Party nominee Tom Golisano, who became his pick for lieutenant governor. Seen as a populist, the Governor-elect initially promised to resign after accomplishing his agenda, which included, among other things, a reinstatement of the death penalty, but in August he pledged to serve a full term. Once Mr. Stern is sworn in, he will become the first Libertarian governor of any state, and in fact the highest-ranking officeholder in the party's history.

Just a warning, I won't go into a huge amount of detail about the events that happened between his election and his presidential campaign - just enough to give everyone a good idea of the climate.

Stern makes last radio broadcast before gubernatorial term begins

DECEMBER 20, 1994 – Governor-elect Howard Stern has hosted the final broadcast of his radio show before his term begins January 1. The Governor-elect announced he would return to radio when his term is complete.

Legislative leaders will work with Stern

JANUARY 2, 1995 – Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver have both announced they hope to work with newly-elected Governor Howard Stern. While Mr. Bruno, a Republican, Mr. Silver, a Democrat, and Mr. Stern, a Libertarian, are of different parties, one issue on which they find common ground is the death penalty – all three men support a reinstatement of the punishment. Other priorities announced by the Governor in his inaugural address, given yesterday, were infrastructure reform, elimination of toll roads, and protection of civil liberties, among others.

A poll conducted recently put Mr. Stern's approval ratings at 53%, with 35% disapproval.

Stern approval ratings hit record high
Jan. 12, 1995 – As Governor of New York Howard Stern completes his first year in office, his approval ratings have hit an all-time high. Stern, while prone to off-color and oftentimes controversial remarks, has passed key pieces of legislation, including infrastructure reform and the reinstatement of the death penalty. The most recent poll, conducted from December 29–31, put his approval rating at 59%, with only 27% disapproval. 14% of respondents were either undecided or had no opinion.

While popular with his constituents, Howard Stern has faced some tension with his own party. Many Libertarian Party officials believe he is a moderate and not fully committed to libertarian principles.

Stern endorses Perot
September 15, 1996 – Governor Howard Stern has endorsed Reform candidate Ross Perot for president. In his endorsement, Stern said, "America needs a new leader, a president who represents and has the support of the people, a president who will fix the cycle of corruption and won't do politics as usual."

While Stern had been previously mentioned as a possible presidential candidate himself, he declined in May, noting, "I was elected to represent the people of New York and I plan on finishing my term as governor."
