There’s been the theory that Wilkie’s nomination was the result of British intrigued, them wanting dearly to ensure that an internationalist was elected in 1940 and not someone in the mold of Taft or Hoover.
I very strongly doubt that.
I remember reading that Churchill felt very relieved when FDR won his 3rd term, which implies that he believed that Wilkie was not good.
