The visit itself was a matter of controversy as there wasn't really much public interest on it (the Catholic Church has taken a huge prestige hit since the worst cases of sexual abuse were uncovered in 2011), and there was criticism of the spending the government would make for the visit itself. And it was going decently well despite the low turnout, until he made that unbelievable remark.

It didn't take long for people to joke on the irony of the Pope (out of all people) asking for proof to believe in something.

I wouldn't use that particular term, but evangelical groups have gained a lot of support during the past few years. They've only now started to meddle in politics (four years ago there wasn't a single Evangelical in Congress), and needless to say their views can be a bit... extreme, particularly compared to how laid back most Catholics can be here.

I see Pope Francis is no longer such a saintly figure that my fellow denizens on the left made him out to be.  

I wonder if he has any idea of the incalculable damage he has done.  As terrible as the crimes committed by pedophilic priests, and those who have strived to protect them by moving them from diocese to diocese, his condemnation of the victims takes the cake.  He will be the death of the Catholic Church.

I'm not secular, but I did have a 'fondness' for the Pope until, well, this happened.

It's surprising because he was making an effort to stamp out the pedos in the Church, and actually had one priest removed for living an extravagant lifestyle, but this will overshadow that.  A lot.

Any love I had for him ended when I found out he compared trans people to nuclear weapons, but yeah, this is a very big nail in that coffin.

Which means absolutely nothing in terms of countries that count religion on the Census, studies and surveys done in countries that don't, and even the church's own membership counts for their dioceses.

Imagine if some state party issued a statement that they were going to count anyone who had ever voted in the party's primary as a member and they wouldn't recognize people who no longer identified with that party. It'd be seen as just comical and meaningless.
