If Trump was smart, this mess would never have happened.

It Trump didn't go back on the DACA deal we wouldn't be in this situation. But the Republicans will probably successfully blame Dems for disapproving of this budget bill that had nothing to do with DACA.

You would have to be completely unmoored from reality to think that anyone but the Democratic leadership is to blame for this.

Anyone saying the Democrats are to blame is completely ignoring the facts. The Republicans control all branches of government.

Democrats are to blame. Can't expect Trump to violate his most important campaign promise: to tacke illegal immigration. Good move on his part.

The time had come to cut a deal on immigration that resolved the question of DACA, addressed the concerns of the American people, and kept the government funded. The Democrats weren't willing to do it. End of story, full stop.

If you look at the way senators voted, both.

What do you mean "successfully blame?"  Polls have most people blaming the Republicans for the shutdown.

Theoretically that could change depending on how the negotiations play out, but with Trump at the helm, Republicans shifting the narrative on anything is a heavy expectation, to say the least.

Nope, we came up with multiple deals that Trump sh**t on. Try again.

The #Trumpshutdown is just part of his master negotiating skills.

Nobody shuts down the government like he does.

I fully place the blame on my party

Same. I place the blame on the party I'm registered for - Republicans. There was a bipartisan deal that Trump decided to just nuke only to appeal to his base.

Democrats, obviously. This is a stupid question.

Care to explain why, for us stupid people who think that the party in power should be able to pass their budgets, or at least negotiate if they want help from the opposition?

The only answer is cowardly Senate leadership for preserving the filibuster.

The democrats. The only difference between the Dems and Ted Cruz back the last time is that the media won’t blame them.

Yes, if McConell truly cared so much about keeping the government open he could ended this with 50 votes to kill the filibuster.

Objectively, the answer is that both are at fault to some extent - the Reps could have changed the Senate rules, or the Dems could have just rolled over - but given the context I blame the former more, as they refused to even try to negotiate, and couldn't rally the will to push it through despite their majority.

Blame, blame... who's to blame.

From what we've heard, Chuck Schumer must have offered Trump to build THE WALL. In response, Trump must have been willing to make the Democrats wide-reaching concessions. But then John Kelly supposedly stepped in and told Schumer that Trump's concessions went too far. Question is: Did Kelly act on his own here or on behalf of the Republican congressional leadership?

....for not conceding absolutely everything to the Republicans in the interests of keeping government open, I suppose.

The American electorate, who can barely be bothered to vote and who have let the political process be hijacked by performative hucksters, extremists and special interests via their apathy
