No primary matchup Sad

They all have roughly the same name approval (about 26%)

But it's

Schuette (R): 33
Whitmer (D): 40

and

Schuette (R): 38
El-Sayed (D): 34

People are prejudiced against Muslims, unfortunately.

Ah yes! Regardless of their qualifications or views, if you don't vote for the minority you're a racist!

The sad truth is that if Abdul El-Sayed was say ‘Adam Edwards’ he’d probably be the front runner, insanely impressive profile.

Regardless who wins the primary, Whitmer and Sayed should be our ticket in one arrangement or the other.

I have no qualms with voting against a Muslim because of policy, or their personal character, or something like that. But this poll has two democratic challengers with the almost exact same level of name recognition. One is a white woman, and she leads the R by 7 points. The other is a Muslim man with a Muslim name who is losing by 4 points. The campaign has barely started, and there's a 11 point discrepancy. Islamophobia.

I already see a lot of RW blogs buzzing about El-Sayed and he's not even the nominee. The right will go absolutely nuts if he's the nut, I can already imagine the FB posts about him wanting to impose sharia law etc.

Biggest takeaway from this poll is that neither of the Democratic candidates breaks 30% name recognition statewide yet both are competitive with Schuette regardless.

This primary is shaping up to be like most Democratic primaries:

Establishment candidate who wins in the end: Gretchen Whitmer
Crazy left-winger that the Bernie wing lines up behind: Abdul El Sayed
Black candidate for identity politics: Bill Cobbs
Random dude who just shows up and gets .2% of the vote: Shri Thanedar

Whitmer will win the general by 4 or 5 points by virtue of the national climate. I knew the day after the 2014 election where Snyder went from a 59% landslide to a 50.5% squeaker that we’d elect a Democratic Governor in 2018 no matter who the president was.

I mean maybe people don't like El Sayed because he's much further left than Whitmer but whatever

Sayed is actually the furthest thing from crazy. Very left-wing, yes, but he's hardly a Justice Democrat. His profile and credentials are actually very impressive, and he's super-intelligent.

Whitmer is a much stronger candidate in general, so the results aren’t too surprising.

She's had a bunch of really weak polls, so this is somewhat surprising, actually. I mean it shouldn't be, but it is.

I am Muslim and I don't want Sayed to win the primaries. He is not going to win a general, I mean Whitmer is by far the best option. Please don't toss away a golden opportunity at reclaiming this governorship by nominating him. I have no problem with him, and frankly I like him a lot, but Whitmer is all that plus more, and would probably win while Sayed would probably lose.

He's also 33. That's extremely young for a statewide politician.

I doubt that. Most people have no idea who Whitmer or El Sayed are, much less detailed knowledge of their policy views.

It's name recognition. Even in this poll nobody cracks 40%. Polls this early are worthless. The fundamentals definitely favor Whitmer though.
