Civil asset forfeiture is often abused but it’s not inherantly bad and is an effective way for police to swipe arbitrary drug dealers.

Civil sequestration is appropriate for protecting the state from people who might sell off assets to start anew elsewhere. States could sell perishable or rapidly-depreciating assets of the accused, only to put the funds in escrow for those who recover them after an acquittal or a dismissal of charges.

Good for them. I hope this passes. Nothing will ever redeem the Republican Party for the choices they have made this century, and they still need to be tossed to their rightful place on the dung-heap of history, but when some Republicans do the right thing, it remains the right thing to do.
