Vice President Portman becomes the Presumptive Nominee after wins in Arizona , New Jersey, New York and Former Ambassador Haley decision to drop out of the race and endorse him after loses in those 3 states. Donald Trump also drops out after an embarrassing performance. On the Democratic side Governor Whitmer wins Arizona and New Jersey while Biden pulls of an extremely narrow victory in New York.

Republicans:

Arizona: Portman 39% 58 Delegates, Haley 30%, Paul 29%, Trump 2%
New Jersey: Portman 50% 51 Delegates , Haley 27%, Paul 20%, Trump 3%
New York: Portman 47% 85 Delegates, Haley 25% 10 Delegates, Paul 21%, Trump 7%

Democrats:

Arizona: Whitmer 48% 36 Delegates, Biden 35% 26 Delegates, De Blaiso 17% 13 Delegates
New Jersey: Whitmer 44% 56 Delegates, Biden 36% 45 Delegates, De Blaiso 20% 25 Delegates

New York: Biden 37% 92 Delegates, Whitmer 37% 91 Delegates, De Blasio 26% 64 Delegates

Republican Map and Delegate Count:

Vice President Rob Portman 1019 Delegates
Former Ambassdor Nikki Haley 534 Delegates
Senator Rand Paul 164 Delegates
Governor Charlie Baker 7 Delegates
Congressman Paul Ryan 6 Delegates
Senator Jeb Bush 5 Delegates

Buisnessman Donald Trump 5 Delegates

Democratic Map and Delegate Count:

Governor Gretchen Whitmer 1003 Delegates+ 349 Super
Former Vice President Joe Biden 925 Delegates + 296 Super
Senator Cory Booker 526 Delegates
Mayor Bil De Blaiso 509 Delegates + 21 Super
Senator Kamala Harris 19 Delegates
Former Governor Mike Beebe 14 Delegates
Senator Kirsten Gilibrand 6 Delegates
Former Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack 6 Delegates
Congresswomen Tulsi Gabbard 2 Delegates

Bidens New York win keeps his chances alive somewhat. If you assume that he wins his Home State of Delaware, Pennsylvania where he was born, Maryland and Connecticut he is still in this thing.

Why is Biden continuing? He can't hope to overtake Whitmer! He'd have to quite literally run the table in the remaining contests, and even then, if he managed to overtake Whitmer's total, he would fall short, Whitmer could still win by just winning a proportion of the delegates. What does Biden want? Another go at the Vice-presidential slot? As it is evident that Portman has the GOP nomination wrapped up, the only game in town is who will the guy select as his running mate. Also where are both party conventions being held in your TL?

How many delegates does each side need to get the nomination?

GOP: 1237

Dems: 2382(Including Supers)but it does not matter since both Biden and Whitmer have said they would drop out at the end of the primaries if they arent the one with the plurality of pledged delegates. So there will be no Contested Convention

CNN Releases first battleground map:

Rob Portman 237
Gretchen Whitmer 193

John King: The Trends of the Romney years really show up on this map as you see the trends towards the GOP in the Upper South , Appalachia and in the Border States during  the Bush and Obama years reverse in many ways as Romney has been a very suburban friendly president.

On the other hand as we can see many affluent suburban states up north have also trended towards the GOP over the past 8 years and this in many ways have put many states in play during the election.

Wolf Blitzer: Virginia through stands out on this map

King: Well the reason for that is the major suburbs in Virginia or DC suburbs which have continued to grow and the nature of being a DC suburb means that there will be a higher percentage of public sector jobs which usually favor the Democrats even if its not as much as we all expected to be after  2008. Alongside the fact that South Western Virginia is similar to West Virginia in many ways could see Democrats making inroads there as well.

In fact there is a chance that Democrats can win both Virginias and still lose and that hasnt happened since 1888.

Wolf Blitzer: So what would you see is the easiest path for both candidates to victory

King: Well the tossup states on this map that are most favorable to Vice President Portman according to this poll is Kansas , Wisconsin, Nebraska 2nd district  and New Jersey and if you give those states to Vice President Portman it would give the Vice President 268 votes and he would just need one more state to win the election.

Now for Governor Whitmer, the most favorable tossups are Pennsylvania, Missouri, Iowa, and Oregon. Add that to her total and that would give her 236 electoral votes . Add in both Virginias along with Nevada and that will give the Governor 260 votes. Now she can win by taking Kentucky and Maine but that in my opinion taking New Jersey or Wisconsin would be better bets and if she does that she will win the election.

Wolf Bitzer: So for now the path is easier for Vice President Portman

John King: Yes for now , but we have a long way to go so its very likely this battleground map wont stay the battleground map come late September early October.
