Two minds about Kefauver: on the one hand he was far preferable from Stevenson and any other hack the 50's machines of the Dems approved of, but on the other he was exactly the sort of cloying sanctimonious moral outrage peddler that would have been extremely grating to have in office (he would have flourished in the Tiper Gore/blow job crisis 90's, let's say that).

He was anti-crime and (iirc) anti-segregation, and from people I've talked to who remember him, he was a good guy. FF.

About as good as you could expect a Southern Democrat from that period to be. Lean-FF.

Harry Truman (the real one) referred to him as "Cowfever" for just that reason; he's still an FF on the balance, though.

Massive FF and one of my favorite Senators of the Post-War era. Estes Kefauver was one of the few Southern Senators who was generally a supporter of civil rights. Kefauver supported the 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Act, supported repealing the poll tax as early as 1942, and condemned the "Southern Manifesto," a 1956 Congressional document signed by a majority of Southern politicians of both political parties in opposition to racial integration of public places. Had he lived another two years or so, Kefauver would have possibly voted in favor of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. Additionally, Kefauver was a strong opponent of McCarthyism, and a passionate advocate for consumer protection laws, antitrust legislation, labor unions, and other progressive legislation.

I don't see the cons to that, as long as they can back it up. And Coonskin Cap clearly can.

Looking at things as they are now, it seems the aversion to such people has gotten us into a rut.

Im not averse to moralism in general, just his pearl clutching was often targeted at stuff like comic books and the like. Which is why I think he would have been a Tipper Gore fan if he had lived to the 90s.

Still an FF though.

Just because he was against the Southern Manifesto doesn't make him anti-segregation, I am tired of people making this enormous leap of logic.

Kefauver seemed genuinely pro-civil rights.  He supported the Brown v. Board of Education ruling.  I think he also would have supported the CRA of 1964 (unlike Al Gore Sr.), if he had still been around.

He also signed every other CRA Bill when he was alive. Gore Sr didn't, and he (Gore Sr) also didn't sign that Manifesto.
