Chief Wahoo is bye-bye on Indians uniforms in 2019.

I wholeheartedly believe the removal of the racist caricature Chief Wahoo from their uniforms starting in 2019 is one step in the right direction.

Hopefully they pick something other than that weird blocky C to replace it.

I hate when people get worked up about this bullshlt, but there is a pretty huge difference between what Florida State University does and what the University of Illinois did and this.  The former had dignified school symbols that tried to honor American Indian culture; the latter is a ridiculously exaggerated parody of an entire people.  Good move.

Sad that an iconic baseball logo will be no more, but it is clearly the right decision. Its undeniably racist and indefensible.

Hopefully they pick something other than that weird blocky C to replace it.

Yeah, the C itself isn't bad, but it would be terrible as the Indians' only logo.

Has the term Native or Aboriginal took off instead of Indian, due to it being seen as insulting? We used to call Natives in Canada Indians until the early 90's, but now all TV news and sports broadcasters all use the term Native. The Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster said he has not called used the term Indians for Cleveland since 1992. That must be pretty awkward to watch the announcer not call the team by their name.

I would call it more racially insensitive than racist, but otherwise I completely agree with you.  As much as I hate to see such an iconic and longstanding logo be retired, it's clearly offensive to many people (myself included) and probably should have been dropped decades ago.

Not good enough. The Indians, like any other team with a Native American nickname, should be forced to change their name as well.

See also the Washington Redskins, Florida State Seminoles, and many others.

Florida State explicitly has the support of the Seminole Tribe. So does any other college using a tribe name mascot.

You're right on the wording.

NewYorkExpress has decided what's right for Native American people ... I highly doubt he or she really cares what the actual Native Americans you referred to think.

Yeah, no. "Seminoles" is a far cry from "Indians" or "Redskins"

It's like the time the Redskins tried to defend their name by claiming that "Golden State Warriors" was just as racist towards native Americans.

The difference between this caricature of literally all Native American people and the traditions at the University of Illinois and Florida State honoring specific Native peoples from those states is simply night and day:

I don't know for sure about the Indians, but just a reminder that 90% of Native Americans support the Redskins' name:

Seriously, those names were intended to honor Native Americans, not denigrate them.  The term "Indian" isn't even inherently offensive; in fact, many (if not most) Native Americans actually prefer it.

The logos of most of those other teams are pretty neutral compared to Chief Wahoo anyway.  Chief Wahoo was intended to denigrate NAs, and for that reason it deserves to go.

They need to get rid of the block C as well. Damn tired of having to remind myself it's not the Chicago Cubs every time I look at the scores. Make the cursive I the main logo.

I'm not offended when people ask if I speak Jewish; that doesn't mean I like it.
