With a couple of western state exceptions (Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico), it seems like the top half of the list is mostly Democratic States overall, while the bottom half of the list is mostly Republican states.

Kansas seems quite high given it's economic state.

New Hampshire is a state where both parties are relatively competent and foreword thinking. I’m not a fan of Indiana being ranked behind Illinois which is a basket case, although of course they have a system of evaluation which seems fairly reasonable.

Eight of the top ten, plus the eleventh have Republican governors.

And 11 out of the bottom 12 also have Republican governors. Is it really that surprising when there are so many more Republican governors than Democratic governors?

If we're going by who controls the state legislature, six are Republican, two are Democratic, and two are different in the Upper and Lower Houses in the top ten. In the bottom ten, all are Republican.

Minnesota #2!  It's like a thing in MN to look at these rankings on those miserable February days when it's so bright and sunny out that you have to squint lest you get snow blindness... but it's so cold that you don't dare go outside.

I'd imagine both NH and MN are similar in that they are both not very magnetic (people don't tend to want to move there)... but are very very sticky (people also tend not to want to leave).

I’m surprised my home state is ranked number one. I was under the impression that we were about to come under siege by many angry women.

California should be Number 1, we got the best economy in the nation (Apple, Google, Twitter, and Facebook are based here), the best Non-Ivy League university's (the UC system and Stanford), the best politics (Democrats always win), along with the most beautiful coastline (big sur) and mountain ranges (the Serra Nevada).
