By running a candidate that cares about the working class and less about rich boys living on coastal villas.

They probably can't (long term), but more or less what bagelman said (short term).

Trump only got 51% of the vote there. We need to stop acting like this was some groundbreaking 60%+ margin win. Hillary failed to consolidate support.

This was accomplished by our elected officials by compassionate conservatism, hope and change, and making america great again.

Traditionally, Democrats have been able to win northeastern Ohio. That was not the case for Hillary in 2016. Instead, Trump's message resonated with working class voters in this area. Thus, the key for Democrats to win Ohio back is to spend significant time pitching economic populism to working class voters, especially in northeastern and north central Ohio (where most of the counties Trump flipped are).

On the other hand, I think it is not absolutely necessary for the Democrats to win OH in order to win nationwide; I believe they can afford to lose it by <5% and still win the election overall.

I don't think creating these threads is helping them, but the answer is simple. Run someone that, like Obama, actually wants to help the WWC.

1. Get higher black turnout.
2. Get a boost in WWC support in the shorterm and hopefully long term.
3. Get more college educated voters around the big three C’s

Trump "only" got 51% of the vote there, but a number of Republicans in Ohio voted 3rd party, as well as a few Democrats.

Ohio Democrats, traditionally, have rallied to victory when Organized Labor delivered big.  This usually happened when the Armageddon of Right-To-Work laws seem likely.  Ohio's been able to hold that off somehow, even as Michigan and Missouri have gone Right-To-Work.  That's the key right now.  If it were only 1958 for the Democrats.  Still, a big push from labor (including unions that represent fossil fuel workers) is the ONLY way for Democrats to prevail.

The other way is to regain at least SOME lost votes in the Southeastern portion of the state.  This part of Ohio is ancestrally Democratic but has trended back to the GOP after shifting toward the Democrats from the Bill Clinton years up until 2010.  This part of Ohio is non-ethnic whites and very, very few blacks, working class, but with union members.  It's also the area of Ohio where Bill Clinton started his bus tour in 1992.  Somehow, the Democrats are going to have to convince these folks that they're not deplorable and stress real common interests.  That's something Hillary Clinton failed miserably at.

Columbus is among the city candidates to host the 2020 DNC so maybe it could help to win Ohio if the Democrats hold the 2020 DNC in Columbus.

I'd rather have Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Florida back.

I'd also rather focus on flipping Arizona and Georgia.

Columbus is among the city candidates to host the 2020 DNC so maybe it could help to win Ohio if the Democrats hold the 2020 DNC in Columbus.

Holding a convention in your target state hardly helps to win elections.  The Democrats lost Pennsylvania in 2016, North Carolina in 2012, Georgia in 1988.  And the Republicans lost Florida in 2012 and Minnesota in 2008 and New York in 2004.  And so on.

To win Ohio, it's going to take a candidate that demonstrates empathy with the white working/middle class--an economic message that would appeal to the broad regions there.

The current message coming out of the national Democratic party sucks.  Just look at the county returns in states like Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia from 1996 and 2016.  What happened??  (This is a rhetorical question).

What it really means is that the Democrats aren't going to win the flyover areas without making a serious appeal to them--whether they are white or non-white.  And that makes it almost impossible to win in 2020 (much less the Senate and House).

I would say that my previous comments would probably be more effective in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  Ohio will be difficult--southern Ohio resembles northern/eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.

Florida is more in the flipping Arizona and Georgia category.  For all of the media hype of Hispanics moving into Florida (or African-Americans moving into Georgia), there are large segments of white retiree types that are moving into areas such as The Villages, the Panhandle, or the Gulf Coast areas.  Similar to here in Georgia--though I believe that it's a younger white population moving into the Atlanta areas.

That's what the Democrats focused on in 2016 and lost, trying to flip Arizona and Georgia. Dems should focus on the Rust Belt, and not make that mistake again.

Actually, Hillary spent more time in Ohio than Georgia and Arizona put together.

Less DLC, More Corbyn on Economics ; less Tumblr SJW/Lena Dunham, more sensitivity toward the majority on social issues. The fact that the center-left party couldn’t win a state in a practically 50-50 election that desperately needs an advocate for the poor and working classes is frankly, sad.

I don’t know why we have the usual suspects wanting to double down on the Hillary strategy and forget the party’s roots.

Stop demonizing responsible gun owners.

Focus on jobs, crime, national security. Campaign in the Cincinnati suburbs. Campaign in the Cleveland suburbs.

I agree with this but I'd spend more time on Arizona than Georgia. I think Arizona has a real chance at flipping in 2020 - I don't think Georgia does. I'd spend more time at the former four states you listed than Ohio. Democrats can win without Ohio, but they can't be getting blown out there like Hillary did. No one should be able to win the state by close to 10%.

Nominate Steve Bullock, he has WWC appeal. If the nominee is Harris, put Tim Ryan on the ticket. Nevertheless, focus on good paying job and training skills for the new labor market and run a strong ground operation. It's often about turnout.

2 words: Sherrod. Brown.

In all seriousness what Soonerdem said.

1. Get higher black turnout.
2. Get a boost in WWC support in the shorterm and hopefully long term.
3. Get more college educated voters around the big three C’s

Take President Obama's advice and "show up" in working class areas. Stop being lazy and only campaigning in big cities.

Increase black turnout and run on economic populism in working-class areas (this includes both whites AND minorities; we saw a dip in turnout among working-class people in general in 2016)
