Traditionally, Democrats have been able to win northeastern Ohio. That was not the case for Hillary in 2016. Instead, Trump's message resonated with working class voters in this area. Thus, the key for Democrats to win Ohio back is to spend significant time pitching economic populism to working class voters, especially in northeastern and north central Ohio (where most of the counties Trump flipped are).
On the other hand, I think it is not absolutely necessary for the Democrats to win OH in order to win nationwide; I believe they can afford to lose it by <5% and still win the election overall.
