I hadn't thought of it before, but this is a plausible scenario for how the United States ends. The GOP controlled federal government just... stops providing services to states that aren't interested in turning into the Republic of Gilead. The Republican voters are okay with it because they're stupid. And the GOP has made the feds both so viscerally hated, and so generally useless, that everyone else just shrugs and says "sure, fine, better than actually dealing with you".

Of course, the GOP might start feeling differently around tax time. Or when the Food Bucket Vouchers stop being accepted.

Now, there's a hell of a US to imagine: a Balkanized country, where "taxes" are really a negotiated mix of bribe and foreign aid, paid by the effectively independent blue states to a GOP regime in DC. There purpose is to both keep the red states from collapsing and causing a humanitarian crisis (think North Korea), and as bribes to the GOP leadership to keep them from unleashing their starving but brain-washed hordes against the successful blue states (think North Korea).
