Russia just wants to cause political chaos.
This in a nutshell.

It is not that complicated. It is not that Russia just loved Trump and his policies, they supported anybody who could wreck some kind of havoc, i.e. Trump and Sanders (anybody but the stable pragmatic Hillary Clinton, basically). Anybody who could disrupt the stable western world. That is also why they support both crazy alt-righters and leftist wanting to mobilize against Trump. The more division and unstability in the west, the better, according to the Russians.

The biggest enemies of Russia are the sane pragmatics on both the centre-left and centre-right. These leaders ensure stability and unity in the western world. These are people like Clinton, Merkel and Macron. This is why in these times sane centrists from both the centre-left and centre-right really ought to stick together on matters of international security and matters of institutional integrity instead of adheering to the old ideological divide.

Just because I don't kowtow to wholesome centrism doesn't mean I don't want to fite Russia IRL
