Granted, I don't watch cable news, but this story reminds me of the adage, "There is your truth, my truth, and the truth, and there's no reason the three have to be the same."  Looks like to me that at the core of this brouhaha there was a disagreement over whether the context the student wanted to provide was an integral part of the question. If you think it was, then being told to cut it could be considered "scripting the question".   If on the other hand, if you think it wasn't, then being told to cut it would be considered as ensuring they could "get to as many people as possible".  So that's likely their two truths, but then there's the truth: the town hall format is wonderful if you want spectacle, but terrible at pretty much everything else.

Now, there's plenty of other details to argue about in this story, such as whether the edits to the emails distorted the facts and whether the "context" the kid wanted to give was more like a "speech", but those details are peripheral to the core of this dispute to my mind.  Certainly the kid and his family were clueless if they thought he'd get a chance to ask multiple questions at a town hall-style spectacle.

There were the riots in Milwaukee, where they edited a video to make the claim that the sister of the guy shot was calling for peace, when she was actually telling people to go riot in the suburbs instead. CNN only apologized for the story after the unedited clip went viral.
