https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-25/china-s-xi-follows-putin-in-laying-ground-to-rule-for-decades

Quote
Chinaís Communist Party is set to repeal presidential term limits in a move that would allow Xi Jinping to rule beyond 2023, completing the countryís move away from a political system based on collective leadership.

The partyís Central Committee announced Sunday that it was seeking to strike a constitutional provision barring the head of state from serving more than two consecutive terms. That would remove the only formal barrier to Xi, who is also party leader and commander-in-chief of the military, staying in power indefinitely.

He should just move to the Forbidden City already.

And given the parallels between the Ming Dynasty and the Chinese Communist Party (both have humble origins), perhaps he would be more properly attired like a Ming Dynasty emperor:

What is his game? He keeps increasing his power, eliminating rivals, now probably lengthen his rule. But for what? Power for power's sake?

As someone who doesn't know a lot about the current factions in the CCP, are there any quality resources that would be good reading for understanding them?

He's a pretty terrible ruler. All he's done in 5 years has been basically purging his political opponents.

IIRC Jiang Zemin tried to go around term limits by getting himself reelected as Chairman of the Central Military Commission (office Deng held without ever being General Secretary or President), but he did finally stepped down in two years.

This is more of a sign that Xi's level of control over the party is lower than expected after the most recent party congress.  Xi spent a lot of time this last 5 years getting rid of people in the Hu and Jiang factions as well as other rivals.  The base case for him is that he would be able to appoint a replacement 5 years from now that also continue his work and keep him out of harms way.   He now seems less sure of that and most likely want an extra 5 year term of make sure that a coalition of anti-Xi factions could not take power after he moves on.

And what is the difference between these factions, in how it will impact the Chinese people and how it will impact international relations?
