With Hatch retiring and Cochran resignation seeming rather likely, Chuck Grassley would be first in line to fill the post if Republicans retain Senate, with Leahy being obvious pick if Democrats pick up the upper house.

It will be Grassley or Leahy, depending on Senate control.

I hate to admit this, but the thread title made me think someone was asking about a Senate map in PowerPoint. Smiley

Who would be the second in line for each party? Hard to remember those factoids.

Grassley is probably the most likely. I wonder if Mitch McConnell will ever be PPT.

Feinstein is next in line for the Democrats.

Is Cochran's resignation certain? I would think he'd hold on just to be Senate PTP?

Honestly, President Pro Tempore should work the same way Speaker of the House does....we didn't need an eighty-eight year old, Daniel Inouye, or a ninety-two year old Robert Byrd to be third in line to be pushing the nuclear button.,

I think Cochran stays (if the Senate stays GOP) just long enough so he can hold the title for at lest some time.

With the GOP, it’s Cochran, then Grassley, then McConnell, and for the Dems, after Leahy it’s Feinstein and then Murray.

There are state Senates (see New York) where the position of a Majority Leader is combined with the office of PPT in order to make it work like a Speaker.

The opposite model would be to give the VP powers to actually run the Senate, like Lt. Governors of Texas and Mississippi do.

It looks like Patty Murray is third most-senior ranking Democrat now, which would make her a PPT at relatively early age... for the job that is.

McConnell is fourt-most Senior Republican and I wonder if he could attempt to merge the jobs. Byrd was the closest to do this, but once he attained the most senior status he retired as majority leader.
