In 1896, the gold/silver issue was so divisive that the election was seen as a referendum on it. However, it hasn't been an issue in any election since. Did the creation of the Federal Reserve cause most people to stop caring?

No. When the Federal Reserve was established in 1913, "free silver" had already lost most of its potency as an electoral wedge, mainly as result of the end of the 1893 panic. You can see this happening as early as 1900, when the Western states that had voted for Bryan and silver in 1896 reverted to their traditional Republican allegiances.

World War I played more of a role in keeping free silver from resurfacing as an issue. The economic costs of that war caused every European participant to suspend the gold standard and then the Great Depression effectively killed it off.
