Apparently the break-in at the DNC in 1972 was not the first break-in at Watergate. The first instance of someone breaking into Watergate was in 1969 at a residential unit, when thieves stole the jewelry of the woman that lived there. That woman was Rose Mary Woods, who would later be used as the scapegoat for erasing the missing 18 minutes of the Watergate tapes.
