OK, it's been some fun, but let's get real, since it's supposed to be an educational site. "Austria" is a fictional concept originally conceived by one Rudolf von Habsburg to justify his and his descendants' otherwise unnecessary existence. In 1866 a great statesman and troll called Otto von Bismarck deliberately "excluded" Austria from a uniting Germany in order to demonstrate he was not that greedy. More recently the "Austria" myth was rehashed by Adenauer after World War II, to make it easier for Germany to distance itself from Hitler, who was too dead to correct them.

And for very good reason, since German TV, film, and culture in general is much, much edgier than the Austrian one:

Lots of Austrians claim that their country was Hitler's first victim. Unfortunately things were much more complicated than that.

True, that's because many lack a good history education (or simply don't care about it these days, because nowadays many people think: "What do I have to do personally with the things back then ? I wasn't even alive !")

You are right, it's complicated: Some 75% of Austrians in the early- to mid-1930s were actually against joining Nazi-Germany, while some 25% (the NSDAP-potential was pretty similar to todays FPÖ-support) was generally in favour. But the economic troubles of the early 1930s with mass unemployment and people at soup kitchens made even part of the 75% - who'd generally support an independent Austria - more likely to join a Greater Germany ...

I don't want to dispute the complexity of the issue, but it goes a bit deeper. Lets remember that despite Sadowa and Bismarck's excluding Austria from the unified Germany, many Austrians long thought of themselves as Germans, who are unjustly separated from the motherland, which persisted long into the interwar period. The so-called "Republic of German Austria" was essentially intended by many as a transitional phase before uniting with the Weimar Republic, something which subsequent Treaty of Saint-Germain blocked.
