If Ryan retires somewhere between Easter and Independence Day, would this boost a potential blue wave in November?

Could a Ryan retirement have the opposite effect, and energize the Republican base?

A wave is building regardless.

Worthless hypothetical.

Irrelevant as the retirement season is effectively over.

I doubt it would do anything one way or the other. The wave is being driven by Trump, not Ryan.

Also, I'm not even sure he would retire before the election, as doing so would neuter his influence in the House. He would be more likely to just resign after November.

If Paul Ryan bolts then that means the polling is much more worse than we can imagine

Ryan stepping down as Speaker before the midterm, even if he doesn't leave his seat, will bolster the wave.

He's more likely to do what Hastert did after 2006 and what Gingrich did after 1998 and just resign from congress all together after the party takes an electoral beating.

Not in Wisconsin it’s not.

I definitely don't see any scenario where it helps Republicans.

It could boost the wave if it encourages a couple other last minute retirements or encourages in-fighting over the next Speaker.

Yeah, if the captain abandons ship in the midst of a hurricane, that's a clear message to his caucus and the Republican donors that it's "every man for himself".

Why would it? Kicking out Ryan is one of the drivers of Democratic enthusiasm.
