What would have been different, had the GOP also won a house majority in 1980? And how long had it lasted? To 1982 only or to 1986? I think even more New Deal/Great Society programs had been repealed and the 1981 tax bill would have been more far reaching than it already was, with Reagan having no trouble to pass it prior to the assassination attempt, that gave him momentum to actually enact it.

Yeah, as a result I don't think it would have changed much.

Welfare doesn't just comprise of general assistance, he raised the cap on social security.  And disability pays our Vets coming out of Nam for the rest of their lives, handicapped.

There would of been a cap on Welfare for sure, before Clinton, and General assistance would of been abolished in most states much earlier.

I think that fiscal conservatives only pass a three year temporary tax cut, and a 15-20% across the board cut to welfare spending. The really interesting question is if Kemp, Kasich, Gingrich, and their allies moderate, in the mold of John Tower, or if this discourages their later attempts to cut taxes and spending.

In that case what is the difference between a conservative Democrat and a Republican is what exactly?

Generally, "conservative Democrat" means someone like Joe Manchin, but from Reagan's election until the Republican Revolution of 1994, many became DINOs ("boll weevils") in order to get re-elected in districts and states that were turning Republican.

Not Much its just that they were less Conservative than the Republicans in their own district(who were also more conservative than the National Republican Party)

I would think the Dem would be more fiscally left, and still socially-right
