If Clinton and Obama opted out of running, and Al Gore said he would give it another go, how do you think he would have done?

His biggest struggle in the primaries would be John Edwards, and I’m sure there wouldn’t be much worry there.

I’m sure if FDR’s decaying corpse ran in 2008 it would’ve won so I’m pretty sure Al Gore would beat McCain by a considerable margin.

He would have won both the primary and general election handily.

With only the assorted opposition of Edwards and the other minor candidates like Biden, Dodds, and Gravel? He would probably cruse too re-nomination on name recognition alone. And if he doesn't screw up then he would easily beat McCain as well if the Market collapses as OTL.

Tough battle with edwards for the nomination till the scandal breaks then Gore crusis to nomination chooses Hillary or Obama as his vp and wins reelection it would be interesting though because I could see Gore carry MO WV AR GA and possibly TN making it a huge landslide and probably keep the dems going in the south a bit longer

Hillary was never not going to run in 2008.

Like Obama, I think Gore narrowly beats Hillary for the nomination, largely because he gets Obama's endorsement relatively late.

Even if Hillary doesn't run, assuming as IRL, Edwards's scandal doesn't come out...whoever Obama endorses wins the nomination. That's how popular he was within the party at the time.

Obama wouldn't have run and Gore would have gone all the way.

Hillary would, quite possibly, have been pushed out of the race.

Hillary probably bows out, or aims for spot two in a manner to make Tim Kaine's efforts look subtle.

This leaves Gore to head against Obama. Gore probably narrowly wins Iowa thanks to his environmentalism, but Obama stays competitive.

Ironically, Obama wins New Hampshire.

The battle goes to June, but Gore ultimately wins and likely picks Obama as his Veep, which goes on to trounce McCain by even greater numbers.

Hillary likely still becomes SoS.

Gore's presence would've largely suffocated Obama early on (since Gore would've received the Anti-War vote), so whether or not Gore ran as a true left-winger, Obama would've been locked out.  As for winning the nomination, Gore would win if he modified his platform from 2000 and ran as a left-winger to cater to Progressive voters (like a Dem Nixon). He'd win the GE with a number of southern states in light of the economic situation.

He may have been a « compromise candidate » between Obama and Clinton.

If Hillary and Obama both opt out of running then he wins the nomination and general election very handily.  However, I don't think either one would just step aside for Gore.

Obama might.

Hillary wouldn't.

He would win a landslide against McCain if he made it through the primaries.
