Let's say that George Wallace manages to win the Democratic nomination in 1972... What does the black vote look like? Does Nixon carry the black belt or do black voters believe Wallace when he claims he's "always" been a moderate on racial issues?

Probably third party as I dont think Wallace had denounced his racist views by 1972(I believe he did so in 1976).

As Old School said, a third party vote is likely, although if Nixon and Wallace were the only two on the ballot, I see Nixon winning the black belt voters.

Yeah, I don't see anyway a progressive third party doesn't run if Wallace was the nominee, unless he 100% reversed his support for segregation and ditched the racist rhetoric.

Yeah, Wallace made it very clear in 1976 he was a reformed man and probably would have won in 1976 if it weren't for the assassination, but in 1972, while I feel he would have done the best out of a democrat against Nixon, he would have still lost
