Looking over the Wikipedia article for the NYC mayoral election, 2013, I noticed that Hillary was considered a "possible candidate" for the Democratic nomination.

Had she run and won, how would this have impacted her chances, campaign, and performance in 2016? I could easily see it swinging either way; either she's saddled moreso with the coastal liberal meme, or she has at least some direct governing experience and real accomplishments to point to... or both.

EDIT: This is probably better suited for a what-if board, my bad.

Actually, being a former SoS was more beneficial for her.

No, even having declined SoS to remain as Senator would have been better.

She should have remained a Senator! Her actions as SoS is what provided the most fodder.

Mayor of NYC would be a toxic position to run on. She'd have been caught in the middle of the BLM movement, and probably end up hated by both the police and the protesters.

This and it may have helped her fight the headwinds of change, she perhaps would not have been as easily labelled an Obama incumbent-lite 3rd term if not having served in the administration.

Being Obama’s 3rd term was supposed to be a strength for her, not a weakness.

Clinton's past positions as Secretary of State and Senator both came back to bite her during the campaign so it's likely that any other office probably would have too. Maybe with the exception of Vice President since they aren't typically associated with policies.

One of the main things which dragger her down was her e-mail server issue. Since this had occurred during her tenure as Secretary of State, it would still have surfaced even if she held some other public office position between 2013 and 2016.
