Instead of trying to target the Presidency, they should target the house and Senate and have a goal of denying both parties a majority in either chamber.

A Centrist third party IMO should do this and once they deny either party 218 in House, get these house reforms to pass

- Get rid of Hastert Rule

- Choose Committee Chairman by seniority (from speakers party)

- Reduce Speaker's Power in  stopping bills from getting a vote on house floor

Do a Similar thing in Senate and maybe Congress will start being effective again

They should build from the ground up. Start in state legislatures.

Worth noting that the Hastert rule is not a written rule and can be reinstated by the next majority.

IMO the goal shouldnt be becoming a dominant party, it just should be to deny either party a majority in Congress to force both parties to be more bipartisan.

So even this would work

a House composition of say

205 Republicans
200 Democrats
30 of this new Third Party

and Senate Composition of say

48 Republicans
48 Democrats
4 of this New Third Party

They wouldn't be any more effective unless they had a core platform point that made them anathema to both parties or made their adherents reject both major parties. Our political system makes it more effective for both those advocating a new position and the existing party for one of the existing parties to embrace and absorb new issues.

One would imagine that people would avoid naming anything after Hastert after the revelations.

Hastert's name was tied, glued, and nailed to it well before that was revealed. The name is going to stick.

I think a lot of states have laws that require each party to have a Presidential candidate to have any other names show up on the state's ballot.   That's the main reason they run national candidates for president.

I’ve actually never heard of such a law. Can you provide an example?

These are decent ideas. People who complain about third parties never getting a chance seem to rarely try to run as one or help organize for them or get them elected in smaller races. Maybe we could also get rid of the electoral college or at least adopt the Popular Vote Interstate Compact in state legislatures. That would make it easier for third party votes to actually matter more at the Presidential level.
