This is a fun TL. But you should have had Dole pull off Ohio or Pennsylvania. I don't think a Dole win in California has been justified.

Part VII

"... umm, I don't believe that this has ever happened before, and in such a... " Brokaw takes a minute to regain himself.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, sighting an ever increasingly tight race and irregular voter turnout patterns, the VNS has decided that it will take both Ohio and Pennsylvania away from President Clinton and put both states back into the undecided category for the time being.  The VNS believes that it may have made miscalculations in its predictions for both states.  Once again Pennsylavania and Ohio are now "too close to call according to the VNS".

"So here is our revised map"

"As you can see, we have shifted both of these key states back into the "too close to call category", making the current total President Clinton: 174, Senator Dole: 199".

"As it approuches the 10:00 hour hear on the Eastern seaboard, it appears that there is much left to be decided and we will stay with you til the last vote is counted".

Dole his figures ready to dial, sets the phone back down.

At 10:00

Polls close in Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nevada and Utah.

Idaho, Montana and Utah are called for Dole.

Iowa, Nevada, Arizona and Wisconsin remain "too close to call".

Clinton/Gore: 174

Dole/Specter: 211

At 11:00

Polls close in California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washigton are all called for Clinton.

Clinton/Gore: 250

Dole/Specter: 211

At 12:00

Polls close in Alaska.

Alaska is called for Dole.

Clinton/Gore: 250

Dole/Specter: 214

As the midnight hour gives way to 1:00AM the EV's of 6 states remain undecided.  In Ohio, 90% of the precints have report and still there in no clear winner.  In Pennsylvania, 77% have reported and still there in no clear winner there either.  Ones thing is clear, it the election of 1996, every vote counts.  Smiley

Part VIII

As the night drags on, tensions get high.  No one is certain which way this election will turn.

At 1:24

Ohio is called for Dole.  With 95% of the precincts reporting, it appears that Dole has won the state by about 10,000 votes.

Clinton/Gore: 250

Dole/Specter: 235

For the first time in the evening, it appears that Dole has come within serious striking distance of President Clinton.

At 1:33

Iowa is called for Clinton.

Clinton/Gore: 257

Dole/Specter: 235

At 1:45

Both Arizona and Nevada are called.  Arizona is called for Dole.  Due to unusually high turn-out in the Las Vegas area, Nevada is called for Clinton.

Clinton/Gore: 261

Dole/Specter: 243

The entire race now hinges on two states: Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

At 2:17

In a suprise announcement, it appears that Dole's margin of victory in Wisconsin will be large enough for them to call the state with 70% of Precincts reporting.  Dole is predicted to win the state by roughly 4%.

At 2:47

With all precints reporting, Dole has won Pennsylvania by less than 5,000 votes.  It is announced that Sen. Robert Dole of Kansas will be the 43rd President of the United States.

Final Count:

Dole/Specter: 277

Clinton/Gore: 261

When the final count is finished, it is revealed that Dole won the popular vote by only 6,281 votes.  The narrowest PV margin in history.

Clinton makes his concesion speech first.  He promises that the Clinton's will return to the White House.

In his victory speech, Dole states that he will stick to the vision that he put forward in the campaign.  He will continue the promise of America.

The election of 1996 is over and the jubilation and care free celebration of the Dole camp and America at the election of a new president will soon change.  Historians will remember the Dole years as the some of the most challenging times that America has ever witnessed.  A time full of tradgedy and triumph.  But more on that later.  Smiley

Super, that was a great story. I wish it had played out that way. Now you have to work on President Dole's re-election in 2000!

I intend to do the entire history of the US until 2004 on this alternate timeline.

Well my original intent was to focus on an alternate history timeline for the late 1990's, I only wanted to spend 3 parts on the election.  I'm still doing the timeline, so this isn't the most important part.  I have a lot of good stuff in store.

He might think it, but he sure wouldn't say it. Can you imagine how ridiculous that would sound?

BTW, you called Iowa for Clinton, but colored it blue.

Woops, yes I did.  Clinton was never defeated.  There is no telling what he would say.

I figured this would be pretty partisan, but it seemed realistic.  Rove is a political campaign genius.  I especially like how they did polls with people over the phone about whether people would be more or less likely to vote for McCain if he had an illegitamite child.  Kudos to the election night coverage, that was very well done, and I imagine it took some time to make.

I think alternate presidencies could be interesting too, as opposed to just alternate elections, but I'm not sure there's a forum for that.

Thank you, the election night took forever.  I have been meaning to create an alternate Dole Presidency since I made this, but haven't gotten around to it.  Now that I have been reminded, I might complete it by the end of August.
