I’ll be interested to see how the trade debate plays out in the primaries.  Normally, the trade debate in presidential campaigns doesn’t get much more specific than support or opposition for whatever the current or recent trade agreements on the table are.  E.g., do you support or oppose TPP?  But what we haven’t had recently is an incumbent president who himself is tariff-happy, and not pursuing big new trade pacts.  So where does that leave the trade debate among 2020 Dems?  Support or opposition for Trump’s tariffs?  Will they get more specific than that?

Warren also criticized Trump’s Asia approach, including the decision to meet with Kim Jong-un:

Extremely disappointed that this does not appear to be an April Fools Joke. Creating a trade war with China is an insanely bad idea and only adds to the fact that Warren would be a terrible president.

No surprise, liberals have been pushing war-like rhetoric against Russia and China for a while.

Warren is absolutely awful on trade. This is why the Democrats need a moderate Dem in 2020.

This is the exact type of rhetoric Warren needs to push if she actually wants a shot at winning the GE. She's absolutely right that China needs to start towing the line if it wants to trade with us. Stealing U.S. intellectual property is a huge problem that we shouldn't just take lying down. We shouldn't start a trade war with China but being firm on them about IP theft is something people should be able to get behind.

Tariffs aren't war-like. But it is mainly hawks who don't like that Trump will be meeting with Kim Jung Un.

Warren tweeted this on friday despite all the efforts from China, DPRK and ROK to ensure peace at the peninsula (meanwhile classless christofascist Mike Pence had that embarrassing posture at the Olympics, but then, I don't expect respect from fascists).

ROK sent artists to perform at the DPRK yesterday and Kim made his first international visit ever and talked to Xi but Warren comes with warmonger clintonite rhetoric, won't feel bad if people call her pocahontas from now on.

Tariffs are economic nationalism, which is tantamount to declaring war, especially these targeted ones. After all, you can't declare total war if your economy is dependent on somebody else.

Tariffs that are maybe 1% of total trade with a country are equivalent to declaring war? LOL. I bet even historical anti-tariff politicians like William Jennings Bryan supported more tariffs than that.

Yeah because now we have progressive ways to source revenue - income taxes, CGT, wealth taxes etc.

If you seriously think the American establishment preparing for conflict with China is done out of progressivism, you're super naïve.

You've never really come off as a liberal internationalist type, CrabCake, but I tend to defer to you on most matters: Do you actually think that a trade war opens up the possibility of hot war, especially since... well, hot war between two nuclear powers is, you know, apocalypse?

FWIW, CrabCake hates China. I think they said something like their dream was for robots to devastate China.

We should have tariffs on any country that doesn't have reasonable labor or environmental standards.

So will America impose tariffs on itself? Nothing more capitalist than the lack of labor and environmental standards.

lol
The US has no labor standards? And no environmental standards?
In what world?
Insufficient labor and environmental standards, ok, that might be agreeable. Saying there is no labor and environmental standards, that's different.

They leave much to be desired, but are obviously better than the PRC.
