Nelson was considered a HP in the US for the entire time he was in prison since the US funded SA's Apartheid and called its opponents terrorists (just like it still does with Israel's apartheid and label disarmed Palestinians getting shot as Hamas terrorists clashing with the lawful IDF).

This is James Seipei. He was beaten to death and his throat was cut at age 14, after he was kidnapped by Winnie Mandela's bodyguard together with 3 other youths.

The bodyguard claimed it happened on Winnie Mandela's orders and she first got a six year sentence for ordering it, but it was later reduced to a fine and two year suspended sentence.

She was a complicated and in many respects a messed up person. Did some good things, did some rather bad ones as well. I tend to think with someone like that that it's important not to gloss over either.

Wise words. Like everybody, I have heard the word "tyres". One rarely hears about the rest.

A brutal system leads to brutal behaviour; not an excuse, but an acknowledgement that 1980s South Africa was in many ways in a state of near collapse - something which people would do well to remember when bemoaning the very many issues the country is facing today.

I must say that I do agree that (even though SA is in a sorry state) SA is infinitely better off than under Apartheid and that the Mandelas did a great service to humanity by getting rid off that system. But tires. That's enough to make Winnie Mandela a horrible person. I suppose violence could have been justified given the situation, but that was just senseless torture.

We will never forget. Winnie Mandela ordered the death of a young child. There is a special place in Hell for the murderers of children. Furthermore, her vicious attacks on Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu will be remembered.

I don’t think Winnie engaged in necklacing, but I do faintly recall her saying something to the extent of ‘snitches get stitches,’ except referencing matches.

Regardless, the 80’s in South Africa got really ugly and her past was decidedly grey.

An infinitely larger number of black people died because of actions by the Umkhonto we Sizwe terrorists than by actions by the actual apartheid government. A pretty damning conclusion, and if 1980s South Africa was truly in a state of near collapse, this was one of the main reasons for it.

Not now, but will try to provide it for you later (I have read about this, but don't have the book here right now).

Infinitely would imply the apartheid government killed no black people. It would be, in fact, more pro-black than America under Obama.

The most telling thing about the almost nihilistic violence in the townships in 1980s was that it was possible at all: if we take Soweto as an example, the state had effectively lost full control over the most populous district in its largest metropolitan area! Probably we should reflect more often on how close SA came to collapsing into a bloody mess: think here not of Zimbabwe, but of Yugoslavia (and not just on racial lines: don't forget, for instance, the very literal conflict between the ANC and Inkatha). That this was averted is one of the miracles of our times.
