Paraguayan General Elections, 22 April

Paraguay is having their regularly scheduled elections on April 22, where they'll be voting for president (in a single round election), governors, all members of both houses of Congress, departamental legislatures and Mercosur parliamentarians

The two main contenders for the Presidency are:

-the conservative Mario Abdo Benítez frim the ANR-Partido Colorado, the party of the current president Horacio Cartes, who won in the primaries against the more moderate and Cartes' backed former finance minister Santiago Peña in a 51-43% race

-the liberal Efraín Alegre, who's running with the broad GANAR alliance between the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (one of the two traditional parties with the ANR-PC) and former president Lugo's (2008-12) left-wing Frente Guasú (Guasú=big or large in the Guaraní language). His VP candidate,  is from the F Guasú. GANAR is an uncomfortable alliance for its member parties as the Liberals supported the succesful impeachment against Lugo in 2012

The polls are a bit of a mess, but most of them give the conservative candidate a large margin of victory

With 95% of the votes counted the Colorado Party candidate Mario Abdo is winning with 46.53% against Efrain's 42.71
The only other presidential candidate who got more than 1% of the votes was Green Party candidate Juan Bautista Ybáñez, with 3.23%

The presidential election was a closer one that the one that many were expecting

Turnout was 61%, the lowest in Paraguay since 1989

Last election (2013) PLRA governors won 4 departments: Ñeembucú (which they lost by 2% this time), Central (the largest department by population, which was won by the Colorados for the first time yesterday),  Amambay and Cordillera (which were again won by Liberal or Alianza Ganar candidates), and Pte. Hayes was won by a PLRA-led alliance, with the Colorados winning all the other ones.
