I suspect a lot would have pick a female running mate to try and counteract Hillary Clinton strong support with women. Please note the reasons given are why each major candidate would pick who they would pick not whether their pick would work as intended.

Just doing a few of the major candidates

Jeb Bush-Susan Martinez (Increase support from the more conservative base/doubling down on increasing the Hispanic vote)

John Kasich-Joni Ernst (Increase support from the more conservative base)
Marco Rubio-John Kasich (increased support in midwest/double down on "moderate" image)

Ted Cruz-Nicki Haley (bring executive experience to the ticket)

Many potential running mates pre-emptively took themselves out of the veep discussion early on after Trump was nominated, including Flake, Haley, Kasich, Martinez, Portman, Rubio, Walker, etc….so Trump was left with a short list of Pence, Christie, Gingrich, and Sessions.  Seems likely that Pence is the only one of those who would have seriously been considered for the short list by anyone else.  If Cruz or Rubio or Kasich had been nominated, then the short list would have looked completely different.

Cruz: Might have still picked Fiorina to counter Hillary, but as he's now the nominee, I think he picks Joni Ernst.

Fiorina: A fellow business wing Republican...maybe Mitt Romney?

Kasich: Rick Perry

Carson: Needs somebody with a lot of political experience who is also relatively young... maybe another VP bid from Paul Ryan?

Paul: probably picks Mike Lee or Justin Amash

Rubio: Needs someone from another part of the country, preferably a White Male. I gave him Scott Walker in this scenario.

Graham: Since John McCain is too old for him... I gave him a like mind in Condoleeza Rice.

Santorum: Needs a moderate, possibly Susan Collins, though he'd never willingly pick her.

Huckabee: Probably would be in better shape than Santorum, but he would also need a perceived moderate. I gave him John Kasich

Gilmore: He would need to really shake up the electorate, and get a quick source of funds, so I gave him Mike Bloomberg.

Pataki: Pataki would also need to drastically shake up the electorate, so I gave him Susana Martinez

Walker: Marco Rubio

Bush: This would be the closest race against Hillary, so Bush has the most to lose with his running mate. I gave him a "safe" pick of Kelly Ayotte, to peel of female voters and win New Hampshire.

Jindal: Did everyone forget Bobby Jindal was also running in 2016? Anyways, I'd give Jindal either Tim Scott or Susana Martinez, depending on the campaigns polling.
