LaSalle Parish usually votes Republican by a wide margin. Why did Kathleen Blanco win the parish against Bobby Jindal by a 61-39 margin?

I hate to play the race card, but that's really the only reason I can think of for a conservative Republican losing a county that usually gives the GOP 85%+ of the vote.

I guess LaSalle parish would rather vote for a white candidate regardless of party due to "rashist" voters.

Race was part of it, but rural voters were convinced that Bobby's healthcare reform would gut rural hospitals.

Her name is "Blanco", for God's sake.

Did Jindal win it in 2007? That might you give an answer to the question of whether race played a role.

Jindal won it in 2007, but underperformed. Jindal only got 55% in a parish that generally votes 70+% GOP. Democrats (including independent John Georges) got 43%. Why did LaSalle vote 43% Democratic in 2007?

So they eventually came around to vote for the brown man when it became obvious that he would win. That doesn't mean they didn't have a problem with it or change the results from 2003 for which the only plausible explanation was racism.

Jindal got 78% in 2011 probably because LaSalle Parish voters didn't know Tara Hollis was white. If they knew, Jindal most likely would have done far worse.

I love Louisiana elections because jungle elections are so much fairer, which leads to so colorful first round maps.
Timberbusinessman and former State Senate President Randy Ewing from Jackson Parish, who only came fifth statewide, won the county in the jungle primary. Guess which party he belongs to...
