I get the need for some required level of decency, but in their current typical state in the US, what is your opinion on them?

Dress codes are a bare minimum. Uniforms should be mandated

Horrible codes. I don't see the need (the burden of proof should be on the authoritarian).

Dress codes overall = good.
Uniforms (at public schools)  = bad.

Pretty much my opinion. Uniforms, amongst other things, are too costly and warrant too much upkeep.

I mean, there should be a minimum dress code, like "don't show up naked", but using a ruler to measure lengths, etc. are bad policies.

Don't get me started on uniforms.

All dress codes are useless authoritarian ideas that need to go away.

every place has dress codes, it's only a problem when the authoritarians have nothing better to go after.  Obviously uniforms are horrible.

I mean in the UK school uniforms are the norm. I admit I'm agnostic on the issue, especially the sort of petty tyrants who made it their personal mission to ensure ties were at the required length or (more creepily) the male teachers who were very interested in skirt length. They certainly don't make kids look smarter, especially when I recollect my own uniform lmao.

Dress codes definitely. Coming from a country where uniforms are mandatory in most school, no one really likes them, we just followed along. Thankfully at my school, in our last year, we don't have to wear them, so that's nice.

I'm OK with them, as long as they're enforced (and very frequently they aren't).  As for uniforms, that's another story.

Went to a school that mandated blazers, starched shirts and ties while banning hoodies, with a team of prefects who enforced the code and were given white braid to sew into their blazers to show their authority. In hindsight it looks like a banana republic. It kind of made sense in context though, as the school was trying to stave off some discipline issues and was trying to show they meant business.

My school doesn’t allow holes in my jeans. Now I’m sad. I have to have those but they say no

Was very happy to have uniforms at my private Catholic high school. But uniforms have no place in public schools.

I personally think children should be able to wear absolutely whatever they want to school, even if that means wearing pasties and a thong or just a pair of badly stained boxers and a cut up Hawaiian shirt.

Well, yeah, and you shouldn't be allowed to wear shirts that say kill Jews, and so forth, but I am generally opposed to what is usually implied by a dress code. For one, they almost always limit women more than men.

I pretty much agree with this, the typical US dress code goes way too far. They discriminate against women and their reasoning for doing so offends me as a man.  Some of those things are nonsense-I don't get distracted by a girl's back, sides, or by someone having blue hair or whatever, and neither do most people.
