Smith's Catholicism was a major issue, and if he had converted, he would have lost Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  And his vote totals where the Catholic population was high (Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey) would have dropped off.

In the South, he would probably picked up Texas (running closer in Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri, and North Carolina).

Hoover would win big in any instance.  The Republicans were the dominant party then, and the economy looked (superficially) to be in excellent shape.
