I'm not going to "prejudice" the results further in the opening post.

Curious what people think.

American's opinion here.

Croatia, Romania, and Slovenia are all Balkans

Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are Eastern Europe

Poland is inbetween Central and Eastern but I counted it as Eastern

Czech Republic (Refuse to call it Czechia), Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Hungary are all central europe imo.

Historically Poland always been trending to the west, dating since we've accepted Christianity from the Rome, as opposed by our Orthodox eastern neighbours.

Not that I care enough, as some of my folks, to get triggered every time we're called "Eastern".

There's kind of a running joke that "Eastern Europe" starts in the country immediately to one's east.

Saying Hungary or Poland is part of Eastern Europe is fighting words in those countries.

We learned at school that Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria build Central Europe.

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, and Western Russia build Eastern Europe.

In a similar spirit, I remember reading in different sources (one for each country) that both Germany and Russia in the nineteenth century thought of themselves as uniquely situated between East and West.

In any case, agreed with the above: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Austria of course, being the center of Europe. After all, we incorporate the German correctness, the Italian and Southern macho-attitude and folksiness, Swiss and Western liberalism and fiscal responsibility and Eastern authoritarianism.

Then:

Germany
Switzerland
Liechtenstein
Northern Italy
Slovenia
Czech Republic
Hungary (maybe)
Slovakia (maybe)
Poland (maybe)

My seventh grade textbook defined it as Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Do Germans use the term "Central Europe" or identify with it themselves?

I haven't voted yet, but to me Central Europe is most closely associated with the non-Balkan parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, excluding its easternmost reaches.

We refer to ourselves as "Middle Europe".

Surprised there are no votes for "there is no Central Europe."  Some have argued that the Cold War basically destroyed the concept.

According to the CIA Worldfact Book, and other sources:

It's curious how much of this territory overlaps with the old Holy Roman Empire:

Though I suppose that's what gives this region its distinctive identity to this very day.
