To determine the quality of the job market for America's 382 metropolitan statistical areas, I conducted some research and used basic formulas to derive results that, I believe, are fairly accurate reflections of the local job markets of these metros. The methodology that I used incorporated a mixture of government statistics, job listing results from Indeed, and the Cost of Living calculator provided by MIT. The first step in the process was calculating the yearly living wage for each metropolitan area (hourly living wage multiplied by 2080), based on the data provided by MIT. The second step involved using the Indeed job search website, setting the parameters to 0 distance, full-time jobs, and the yearly living wage for each metropolitan area and adding up the results for each of the counties in each metropolitan area. The third step required the Bureau of Labor Statistics civilian labor force and unemployment page, which lists the percentage and raw number data for the unemployed population in each metropolitan area for the month of February 2018. The fourth - and final step - was taking the total number of full-time, living wage paying jobs in a metropolitan area and dividing that by the total number of unemployed people in that metropolitan area. Are the results perfect? No. But, I believe this is one of the most accurate reflections of local job markets.
