I agree with this, but for different reasons.  Had Cruz only stood his ground against Trump to the end and then Clinton barely won with MI/PA/WI or MI/FL, he would have coasted to reelection, would have been the obvious 1st in line for 2020, and Republicans would likely have ~2/3rds majorities in Congress after 2018.  He could have been the Republican FDR signing the Republican New Deal.

Instead, he gets a close reelection fight in Texas against a random left wing congressman and virtually no chance of further advancement while tries to play catch up as his party moves away from his ideas.
