Executions in the United States by counties of conviction between 1960 and 1967, when, as present, usage of death penalty was in decline.

California was really into law and order back then, wasn't it?

The first ten years following Gregg rule, that reinstated capital punishment.

You can see where the term "Death Belt" came from.

Very much so, I'm afraid to say, although not so much in this century. The CA Supreme Court abolished the death penalty prior to Furman, but the voters overturned that decision shortly after. The death penalty has been rather high-profile in California ever since. Governor Deukmejian (the former state AG) led a successful crusade to remove anti-death penalty justices in 1986 and replace them with those supported the death penalty.

I do recall reading that Riverside County, CA was basically the capital of capital punishment in California.

I've always found it ironic that San Quentin, California's death row, is in the heart of the Bay Area. I've actually driven past it more than once. It's just barely north of the Golden Gate Bridge. When you leave San Francisco to the north, you can't miss passing it on the 101.

90s were the pinnacle of execution rates since 1977, even though, as you can see, the map is wildly uneven (lol Mississippi standing out)
