We should have Leip bucks.  In Dave We Trust.

This would be an interesting idea for Atlasia. Maybe: You start with $100 Leip Bucks, spend $10-$20 for each election you run in (depending on the office), get paid a certain amount per day for the elected/appointed positions you serve in. $30 fine for not voting in a federal election, not including runoffs/specials. If you hit $0, you go bankrupt and get deregistered, though you can rejoin with a refilled account after a one month waiting period.

Making a sock should be an automatically bannable offense.  Furthermore, there should be an online registry for people who do it (and cheat at multiplayer video games).  All of their usernames must include a red A in them (the A is for asshole) for all time....unless they donate $1000 to a charity they hate.

There should be more serious and obvious social punishments for a lack of integrity.

Dave Leip has clarified that though actions on sites other than the Atlas are not our responsibility, actions on other sites that bear on infractions on the Atlas can be used to lead to a more speedy ban. Based on that, matthew27's permaban has been expanded to the entire Atlas.

It shouldn't have taken Leip intervening and mods threatening to resign for the right thing to happen.

I can't help but feel like this wouldn't have been a tough call five years ago.

Five years ago we had problems with established users who had behavior off-site that clouded whether or not they should be banned. The accepted policy was that only direct Forum behavior counted. Despite references to pedophilia and clear evidence supporting that behavior off site it took months and Dave's intervention to ban opebo (Jan 2014).

It's just stating that this isn't a new situation, and that this time it was resolved far more quickly than it was five years ago. Furthermore the resolution this time provides for prompt resolution in the future which was not true five years ago.

Well my bad then. I guess going from taking months to ban a pedophile and having the site owner needing to intervene to make that happened to taking like a week and almost losing some of the only decent mods around here to ban a racist and crazy fruit loop is plenty of progress for half a decade.

Who were the others? It certainly does not sound like from the plural use of the term mods in NYGurls post that it was just 1 mod.

I don't see how he wasn't able to be banned quickly for the stuff he said on-site, all that seems like it should've been enough on it's own.

Had he been a new poster with no history on site, then yes his posts in Atlasia this May would have been sufficient. For a poster with three years history and no prior formal warning for racist posts, the historical reaction to a single outburst (measured by moderated posts) would be a formal warning and some type of sanction, but not a permaban.

I can't shake off the impression we're spitting a hair in four now with this debate.

Opebo ban was really a big deal, both due to the public reaction (it was extremely controversial), as well as it being a precedent. Matthew27 was so much an easier case, given that support for him was essentially nonexistent (both among the community at large and, as it's been already known, within the team), and the fact we've already been thought this with an established user.

There's another aspect we've been overlooking here: a very real security risk matthew27's presence posed for this forum. It might sound silly but if Dave can face possible legal issues due to some of us using copyrighted images, the last thing we want are the authorities stumbling across our forum while investigating the Stormfront circle, that already produced literal terrorists. Also, as already shown, matthew27 had been a notorious Stormfront user, had his post cited by various established sources, such as the SPLC. A mere association with the Atlas can prove very problematic. That alone I think trumps all other concerns.

Dave intervening might've saved us a lot of serious problems and I hope things can change in result of his timely action.
