Background Pt I: Early Beginnings (1870-1898)

The life of President Conrad Adenauer is quite the story. Born the first of Five Children from a German Immigrant Family on January 5th, 1870, Conrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer came into the World of the Reconstructionist South, Specifically, the State of Tennessee. During this time, the South, usually Solid for the Democrats, had Republican Leanings due to Federal Troops being stationed in the South. This had a major effect on the Youth of Adenauer.

In 1874, the House Elections, a key part in the Election of a President, was close, but, in a stunning upset, the Republicans, Which has had the House since 1861, kept the House with 150-129-14. Two years later, Rutherford B. Hayes won what many would consider a landslide win due to Southern African Americans turning out to vote and Democratic Electors turning on their party.* Due to this, Troops stayed in the states of South Carolina and Louisiana, allowing the Republican majorities there to stay in place. The riots that followed would see Federal Troops deployed in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and West Virginia

* 4 Faithless Electors in Arkansas, 8 Faithless Electors in Missouri, 9 Faithless Electors in Indiana, 25 Faithless Electors in New York, 9 Faithless Electors in Kentucky, 8 Faithless Electors in Georgia, 7 Faithless Electors in Tennessee, 6 Faithless Electors in North Carolina, and 3 Faithless Electors in West Virginia went to Hayes.

"The Election of 1876 shaped my future. I didn't know that it would then, but now I do know." - Conrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer, February 16th, 1908

Adenauer would grow up in the Republican Dominanted Upper South for the Next 14 years of his life. His Father, Johann Konrad Adenauer, had created a Business in their home city of Knoxville called "Adenauer Supplies" which gave supplies to those that needed, including Guns for African Americans to Defend themselves with, Books for African Americans so they could learn to both read and write, and many other things. Despite having a majority African American Consumer Base, there were still massive sales to Whites. The Company, founded in 1872, would become a very strong Company by 1878 with around $17 million gained annually (over $408 million when Adjusted for Inflation today), making the Company extremely rich and giving the Adenauers multiple connections across the Upper South, something that was very important in the later future of Conrad.

Conrad would begin his Education in 1878 via being Homeschooled by his Family instead of him going to Public Schools, which spewed quite a lot of hate and Vitriol to the Republicans and African Americans. The young Conrad would grow up admiring Abraham Lincoln, who he saw as "One of the Greatest Presidents America ever had and will ever have. He fought for what he believed was right and died for that same thing. I admired the Drive of Lincoln and strode to be like him." though he would also learn Economics, German, English, Mathematics, Science, History, Literature, Astrology, and Political Science. Being weakest in Science, Conrad still had many passing grades and excelled in many of his studies.

Conrad Adenauer in 1888, while he attended New York University.

In 1888, at the age of 18, he left Tennessee to go to the New York University. There, he would once again excel at everything except Science, getting Degrees in Business, Economics, and Political Science by 1892. He stayed in New York for two more years due to him having fallen in love with a lovely Woman in Albany by the name of Doshie McKinnon. They would have a firery relationship and we're madly in love with one another, Marrying in the Spring of 1894, after 6 years of dating. In the summer of 1894, Conrad would return to Tennessee and become the Co-Owner of his Father's Business, his time in New York giving him connections to New England as well as the Upper South.

Conrad and Doshie would have their first child, Oswald Adenauer, in the Spring of 1895. Conrad began to use his knowledge to his advantage as he began to lay the Groundwork for a future in Politics. He identified himself as a Republican and stated that the Removal of Federal Troops in 1894 from the South via the Federal Troops Removal Act under President Cleveland, whom was elected in 1888 for a second Non-Consecutive Term, as "...the biggest mistake in American history..." due to the African American population of the South being left out to dry. He would also begin to help fund Republicans running in the Upper South and use his Connections to help them win in the needed districts. In the Gilded Age of Politics, one could say that Conrad Adenauer was a clean Businessman, only having the "Support me when I run" agreement with those he founded and if they won. In late 1896, he Campaigned heavily in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri for Republican Nominee William McKinley. He would win those states against Democratic and People's Party Nominee William Jennings Bryan. McKinley would have 292 Electoral Votes over 155 Electoral Votes for Bryan* allowing a big victory for the Republicans.

McKinley/Hobart: 292
Bryan/Sewall: 147
Bryan/Watson: 8**/***

* 1 Faithless Elector in Kentucky and 1 Faithless Elector in California went for Bryan/Sewall

** 4 Faithless Electors in the States of Tennessee and Missouri went for Bryan/Watson

*** Bryan ran as the Nominee for the Democratic and People's Party, thus having Two Running Mates

For all of 1897 and Early 1898, Conrad would continue to build his business and gather Political connections across Tennessee for a future run for Office. In April of 1898, however, War Broke out against Spain due to the Destruction of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Cuba, a Colony of the Spanish Empire. Conrad would leave a 2 month Pregnant Doshie, a 2 year old Oswald, and a 7 month old Daughter, Veronica Adenauer, named after Doshie's Grandmother, and his part in the Family Company behind to join the Military, more specifically, he joined a regiment led by Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt called the Rough Riders. He was one of the first soldiers who got on top of San Juan Hill and helped to secure the position for the American and Cuban Forces. The War would end a Month and 12 days later and Adenauer and the rest of the Rough Riders, including Theodore Roosevelt, would become Celebrities as they returned home. In a letter to President McKinley, Adenauer begged the President to honor the Buffalo Soldiers, African Americans in the US Army, that fought and gave Cover fire for the Rough Riders at  San Juan Hill. While President McKinley wouldn't do it, Adenauer himself would make sure to do it later on in his life as President.

On July 27th, 1898, he announced his intentions to run for Mayor of Knoxville, as he returned 16 days before the Spanish-American War ended. He would defeat Democratic Nominee William Rule with 56.71% of the Vote to Rules' 43.29% of the vote. He would easily win Re-election in 1899 due to the popularity of being a war hero not wearing off yet and announced that he planned to have only 4 terms in office as Mayor. Unknown to many others, Mayor Conrad Adenauer would be the most important thing the Nation ever got.

Boop.

First Background done. Next will be his Mayoral years and everything from 1899-1911.

Also no Compromise of 1877, so that's good. What do you all think?

Have a great time

Background Pt II: Mayor, Governor, Businessman (1899-1911)

After having been elected Mayor of Knoxville in 1898, Adenauer set his sights on a number of reforms. He would consistently lower Taxes for the City, set multiple rights for African Americans living in the City, put Regulations and Restrictions on the main Business in East Tennessee, his Business. His Father would understand why he had done it however and followed the rules set up by his son. After his fourth and Final term in Knoxville in 1901, he went for the Juggular. He announced his Candidacy for Governor of Tennessee in 1902.

He had ran for Governor of Tennessee in 1900 but he had just barely lost the Republican Nomination to Congressman John E. McCall. This was mainly due to the Republican Establishment in the state disliking and untrusting of him at the time. This time, however, Adenauer had a very powerful ally. In the year 1901, after winning Re-election Against Bryan, President William McKinley was shot and Killed. His Vice President at the time, Theodore Roosevelt, would then become the New President of the United States. Being a war hero and astoundingly charismatic, as well as a friend of Adenauer, Roosevelt was extremely Popular with the Republican Base and thus was a key ally to have.

Due to Roosevelt stating that Adenauer was perhaps the best choice for the Party in Tennessee, Adenauer was easily nominated as the Republican Candidate for Governor over Judge H. Tyler Campbell. He would go on to face James B. Frazier, a fantastic Orator who campaigned for William Jennings Bryan in 1900. The race was extremely tough with the Newspaper calling it "The War in Tennessee" due to how Popular both Candidates were. There were a total of 9 Debates between the two with Adenauer winning the First, Third, and Ninth Debates, Frazier winning the Second, Fourth, and Eighth Debates, and the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh were considered ties. At the end, many believed that Frazier would just barely win the Governorship due to Tennessee being a Supposedly Solid State for the Democrats in off Election Years. As the results came in on Election Day, there were conflicting reports, with some saying that Adenauer had won while others said Frazier had won. Three days after Election Night, however, the final results were counted and Conrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer was elected the 28th Governor of Tennessee and was the first Republican to be state Governor since Alvin Hawkins in 1880. Adenauer had only just barely won with 51.34% of the vote going to him and 47.66% of the Vote going to Frazier while Prohibition Candidate R. S. Cheves got the remaining 1% of the vote. With this very needed win, the New Governor began to lay his plans for future reforms in the state.

1902 Tennessee Gubernatorial Election

After his narrow victory as Governor, Conrad decided to follow the safe route of his Predecessor Benton McMilin with his biggest accomplishment being that he raised the Legal Children Work Age to 16, which was considered very adult at the time. He also lowered Taxes to healthy 28% for the Rich, 26% for the Middle Class, and 24% for the Lower classes while he raised State Tariffs by 5-7%. Other notable things he had done in his first term as Governor was enforce multiple Health Laws, installed the Tennessee Corruption Arrest Act, which would lead to State Politicians, Local and National, being Arrested if it's found out they took Bribes while in Office. With massive Approval, he won Re-election handedly in 1904 against Democrat John Issac Cox with 64.51% of the Vote to Cox's 32.31% of the vote, allowing him a Second Term in the Office of Governor.

1904 Tennessee Gubernatorial Election

His Second Term is perhaps the single biggest event that changed the Upper South for the Better. He had instituted the same regulations and Restrictions on Businesses and Monopolies like he had done as Mayor of Knoxville. But the biggest change was on May 24th, 1905, when he signed the Tennessee African American Rights Enforcement Act, which forced the De-segregation of Schools, gave more Voting Rights to African American Men and Women, allowed African Americans to speak their minds freely and publicly, and they would be allowed the other unalienable rights that the United States had to offer. In the case that these weren't allowed to happen, the State Guard would be deployed to enforce the law.

Almost immediately, protests emerged and a slight resurgence in the Ku Klux Klan, an extremely racist Organization that sought to empower White people and Kill/bring down African Americans. Many State Democrats followed in their footsteps and Anti-Republican News Outlets started calling him the African German Republican. This all boiled to the 1st March on Nashville by the KKK on July 25th, 1905, the 3rd Birthday of Conrad's 4th son, Edgar Adenauer. On that day 10-15,000 KKK members lit torches, dawned the feared Klan Costume, and marched down 882 Southern Curtiswood Lane in Oak Hill, Nashville, where Governor Conrad was living in a House that was Finished being built in March of 1905.

The State Guard and Dozens of Armed African American Citizens stood side by side to try and stop the Klan members from approaching the Governor, as everyone knew that if they did so, the Result wouldn't be pretty. All in all 567 African American Citizens, 315 White Citizens, and 1089 State Guards stood in front of the Mob with weapons at the ready. Constant Screaming and shouts at both sides were heard. It looked as if that that would be the only thing that would happen before a Rock hit State Guard Private James Newsam, a cousin of Doshie Adenauer (Doshie had taken Conrad's last name in the Marriage), which led to him opening fire on the Mob, which then led to the other Armed State Guards and Citizens to open fire on the Crowd. The Crowd began to hurt objects but as more State Guards joined the fray, the Mob began to Route. In the end, 3 State Guards, 7 White Citizens, and 19 African American Citizens were wounded with Two African American Deaths, making the Total Casualties of those who defended the Governor at 31 while 567 people in the Crowd were killed, 1209 were Killed, and 2345 were arrested, bringing the Crowd casuality list to 1776. The Event, titled by many Democrats as "The Nashville Massacre" was a bloody afair and it lead to Tennessee garnering National Attention.

The First March on Nashville was an absolute Bloodbath due to the Klan having protested Governor Adenauer's Reforms

Governor Conrad wrote to President Roosevelt "Mr. President, I'm sure that you have read in the news of the Massacre that happened in Nashville a few days ago. Those are not people, they are Animals, Demons. I would to request you to come here so you can offer your support to the African American Community in this State and would encourage many Republicans and Moderates to stand up to those Foul Beasts."

President Roosevelt would arrive in Nashville on October 9th, 1905 with 243 National guardsmen as Protection for a 5 day long trip across Tennessee to give his Support to the Governor. For those 5 days, President Roosevelt was able to raise massive Support for the Governor's Anti-Jim Crow career, as Opinion Polling in Tennessee showed 52% of Citizens approved, 45% disapproved, and 3% were unsure. Despite this fact, a second March on Nashville happened on October 14th, just before the President was scheduled to leave. The Mob was smaller than the last one, with only around 5-7500 members in it. Meanwhile, the state Guards, who were bolsterd by President Roosevelt's National Guard, numbered at 1500 with 100 White Citizens, and 450 African American Citizens. Just like the time previous, a rock was thrown at a State Guard, which led to gun shots being heard. This was, however, unlike the First due to the Fact that the Mob had Guns which would be used to fire at the Governor and Presidential Guards. After 3 hours, the Crowd dispersed.

In total, 12 State Guards, 5 National Guards, 11 White Citizens, and 36 African American Citizens were Killed while 20 State Guards, 15 National Guards, 30 White Citizens, and 70 African American Citizens were wounded, bringing the Casualities up to 199 for those defending the Governor's Mansion and the President. Meanwhile, 200 Members of the Mob were Killed, 500 Wounded, and 153 Arrested, bringing their Casualities to 700, bringing the total list to 899, smaller than the 1807 Casualities from the previous March on Nashville. This brought the attention of the Nation once more on Tennessee. Many Democrats, including President of Princeton University Woodrow Wilson, who called Governor Conrad "A Dictator that has no real reason to be Governor", went to the Defense of the Mob while the majority of the people supported the Governor. This was Governor Conrad's first real National Exposure and it would prove beneficial to his later plans in the next decade.

In 1906, he announced that he would not seek a third term as Governor and instead supported speaker of the State Senate and Friend Ben Walter Hooper for the Republican Nominee for Governor. Hooper easily won the Nomination but barely won the Governor's Race against Malcom R. Patterson with 52.34% of the Vote for Hooper and 47.66% of the Vote for Patterson. Adenauer would run his family business by picking it up after his father had died, with his Brother August running the Company after his father died in the Summer of 1906. On January 20th, 1907, Adenauer would retake his Business and begin to expand it to New England, the Great Plains, the Midwest, the Pacific West and even the Mid-Atlantic, allowing him to quickly surge in Name Recognition.

He expanded his Business' Worth 5 Fold and allowed Conrad to become a household name for many Americans. In 1908, at the behest of his Wife, he announced his Candidacy for the Republican Nomination for President. He was the Second biggest as he won 12.37% of the Convention Vote and got 97 Delegates. However, he couldn't overcome Secretary of War William Howard Taft from being Nominated in a landslide. Taft would go on to win the 1908 Election and the Republicans supported him for the time being. In the 3 years following this, Conrad became known as the Businessman Former Governor and expanded his reach even into the Deep South, especially Florida. He had given funds to Candidates that we're running for Election, Mainly Republicans, but never bribed them.

By 1911, Conrad had built himself a practical Empire within 4 years but the Republican Party was falling apart at the seams due to how Unpopular Taft was across the Nation, even Roosevelt, who handpicked him to be his successor. Adenauer was building his image and supporting his main Republican allies but he couldn't ignore to idea of the White House. On November 19th, 1911, Former Mayor of Knoxville, Former Governor of Tennessee, Candidate for 1908 Republican Nomination for President, and Current Businessman Conrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer announced his Candidacy for President of the United States of America, with the Slogan "A New Future for America."

Thoughts?

Next chapter will be the last part of the background and it details from 1912-16, specifically the Election of 1912 and Adenauer after that.

Thanks. I'm hoping for this style (History Book-lite) will be a good way of getting the reader engaged with the Timeline.

Btw, what do you like most and what do you dislike most about this TL?

I really like it. There’s nothing that I really dislike. It’s a really creative character that you’ve used and I mean it’s great! Hopefully he defeats Taft and Wilson. I have a feeling World War I will be pretty interesting under President Adenauer.

1912 was never the Republican year to win, sadly. Also, IIRC, Teddy believed Only he could fix everything as the Republican or Bull Moose Nominee. But watch what happens in 1912 because it'll be interesting. And yes, WW1 will be interesting as well

Background Pt III: The Business Candidate (1912-1915) [PT I]

The 1912 Election was what many would currently call a mess. There were Six Candidates all running at the same time in the General Election. For the Republicans, Wisconsin Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin, Former President Theodore Roosevelt, Former Tennessee Governor Conrad Adenauer, and Current President William H. Taft ran for the Nomination. Prior to the Republican National Convention, Roosevelt had won the Primaries and Caucuses in New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Illinois, and California, while Adenauer won Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Maryland, Follete winning in Wisconsin, and Taft winning in Ohio. As all 4 Candidates went into the Convention, both Roosevelt and Adenauer had more Delegates but they each had their own brand of Progressivism. Roosevelt had normal Republican Progressivism while Adenauer had one called Populist Progressivism. Due to this, they couldn't find solid ground to Join together. This was joined by the fact that President Taft had filled the Convention with his people and his Supporters. Thus, Taft was Nominated for the Republicans. Adenauer, Roosevelt, and their Supporters left the Convention. Roosevelt would form the Progressive or Bull Moose Party while Adenauer formed the Popular-Progressives for America or Eagle Party. All in all, the Republican Party was in Turmoil by the General Election and it was very clear that they wouldn't last.

1912 Republican Presidential Primaries

For the Democrats, the race for their Nomination was close between Governor and Dark Horse Candidate Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey, Speaker of the House Champ Clark of Missouri, Governor Judson Harmon of Ohio, and Governor John Burke of North Dakota. Wilson would go on to win his home state of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Oregon. Clark would win in Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois, Nebraska, and California, while Harmon and Burke would win their home states. Many believed that Clark was a shoe-in for the Nomination at the Convention, however, William Jennings Bryan, who ran and lost in 1908 to Taft, still had a lot of influence within the party. Bryan favored Wilson more than Clark, in a big surprise, and on the 46th Ballot, Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey became the Democratic Nominee for November.

1912 Democratic Presidential Primaries

The Running Mates for each Candidate was Governor Thomas R. Marshall of Indiana (Wilson), Governor Hiram Johnson of California (Roosevelt), Senator William P. Dillingham of Vermont (Adenauer), Vice President James S. Sherman of New York (Taft), Mayor Edmund Seidel of Milawaukee (Debs), Ohio Politician Aaron S. Watkins (Chafin), and New York Politician August Gillhaus (Reimer).

The General Election of 1912 was perhaps the strangest and craziest General Election in American Political History as in no other Election had there been 2 Major Third Party Candidates to challenge the Major Party Candidates. There was also Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist Candidate, running for the 4th Time, and Prohibition Candidate Eugene W. Chafin as well as Arthur E. Reimer running as the Socialist Labor Candidate. To say that the race was Violent and Chaotic is at most an Understatement.

Taft was constantly held back by the Eagle and Bull Moose Parties while Wilson had to Defend himself from the Slowly rising Debs. All Seven Candidates battled one another throughout the race before Adenauer issued a Challenge. In a speech he gave in Burlington, Vermont on October 11th, he challenged all six of his opponents to a Presidential Debate. Roosevelt, Debs, Chafin, and Reimer all immediately agreed to the challenge while Wilson responded a week later with a yes, and Taft responded on the 21st with his own yes. Thus, people from all Seven Campaigns met and despite some initial arguing and Debating over when and Where the Debate would take place. On October 27th, it was announced that the debate would take place on November 2nd, three days before Election Day, in the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, home to the Battleground Weshtenaw County, in a state everyone believed they could win. Disaster struck for the Taft Campaign on October 30th when Vice President Sherman died of Health Complications. He was replaced by President of Columbia University Nicolas M. Butler of New York on November 2nd, just a few hours before the Debate of the Century, as many would later call it.

Using his impressive Resume, how Tennessee gained much after he became Governor, the success he can bring to the Country, and his indisputable knowledge in Business, many considered Adenauer the Winner with Roosevelt in Second, Wilson in Third, Debs and Chafin tied in Fourth, and Taft and Reimer in last. This victory allowed Adenauer to use his momentum and Target the states of Vermont, Illinois, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and New Hampshire while Roosevelt would focus on the states he believed he had a chance in. Wilson hoped to pick up as many Electoral Votes as so he targeted states he believed were crucial to win, such as Minnesota and Ohio. On Election Day, via Opinion Polling, Adenauer was soon leading Roosevelt by 2 points and Wilson by 3 points but many experts believed that Wilson would still win in the Electoral College. As the first results came in, everyone held their breath.

1912-1940 Poll Closing Times

Orange: 8:30 PM EST (213 Electoral Votes)
Yellow: 9:30 PM EST (205 Electoral Votes)
Green: 10:30 PM EST (74 Electoral Votes)
Blue: 11:30 PM EST (14 Electoral Votes
Red: 12:30 AM EST (25 Electoral Votes)

So, which do you guys want? Election Night 1912 or finish Adenauer's pre-1916 Backstory?

Also, I might write the debate, but I'll probably be as a Bonus Update and it probably won't be around for a while. Finally, General Thoughts?

1912 ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE PT II

10:45 PM

"It is now 10:45 PM in the East and we can project that the states of New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahome will go to New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson while the state of Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This puts Wilson at 230 Electoral Votes and Adenauer at 103 Electoral Votes. Wilson just needs 36 more Electoral Votes and he's won the Election. His moderate lead in Colorado is growing but his leads in both Minnesota and Missouri are shrinking, though as votes start to run out, it's doubtful that those two states won't go to him. In Tennessee, we need a few more minutes to be 100% sure that Adenauer will win it, though Adenauer is certainly kicking Wilson around there. This is also Extraordinary because someone other than a Democrat has won several Great Plains States."

11:00 PM

"It is now 11 PM in the East and we have 3 new Porjections. Woodrow Wilson will carry the states of Missouri and Colorado while Adenauer will win his home state of Tennessee, bringing their respective Electoral Vote Counts up to 254 and 115 respectfully. Wilson is now just 12 Electoral Votes away from becoming President and with Minnesota coming closer and closer to being callled, it looks like he will win the 12 Electoral Votes needed to win. He has no chance in the West so Minnesota is his last chance. This is also momentous because for the first time in 12 years, a non-democrat has won Tennessee on the Presidential level. We also have a projection i means of the popular vote. Initially, Roosevelt was in the lead from 8:30 PM in the East to 9:00 PM in the East then Wilson had control of it. Now Adenauer is leading both of them while Wilson is now in third in terms of the Popular Vote."

In Nevada, Roosevelt is barely leading Eugene Debs as well while in Idaho, Adenauer has a big lead over Roosevelt and Debs and is very likely to win the state."

"It is now 11:45 PM and we have two projections. In the state of Utah, President Taft finally is on the Electoral College as he takes it's 4 Electoral Votes. In the state of Idaho, in a very boring surprise, Adenauer wins the state. We also have projections that Debs is leading in both Arizona and Nevada. He fought heavily in these two states during the campaign and it's very likely he'll win them because of that. Adenauer now stands at 119 Electoral Votes to Taft's first 4. Also, Minnesota has 90% of the vote in and Wilson leads Adenauer by 6 points and Roosevelt by 3, meaning it is still quite close to be called yet."

Debs of Indiana wins, meaning this is the best Socialist Performance in it's young history and his 4th run gives Eugene V. Debs 6 Electoral Votes, meaning he now leads President Taft, despite tailing him in the popular vote by 200,213 votes."

12:30 AM

"It is now 12:20 AM in the East in the very early morning of November 6th, 1912 and we can state that the polls in California, Oregon, and Washington have closed. Now, only just 37 Electoral Votes remain to be gained and we have made a true prediction. Roosevelt wins the states of California and Oregon, bringing him at 129 Electoral Votes. Adenauer wins the State of Washington, bringing him at 126 Electoral Votes, and Wilson wins the Presidency after he wins Minnesota at 266 Electoral Votes. All in all, tonight is rather close. We also have a projection the popular vote. Taft is now 1567 votes behind Eugene Debs in the Popular Vote. If this continues, this could be the worst incumbent performance in History. Minnesota is at 95% of all votes counted and with Wilson leading both his opponents there by 4 and 2 points respectfully, the race in the state is closest it will ever be. On the West coast though, Adenauer is leading moderately in Washington and slimly leading in Oregon while Roosevelt is leading in California."

Background Pt III: The Business Candidate (1912-1915) [PT II]

Following the Election of 1912, the Former Tennessee Governor's Popularity had skyrocketed. Being the winner of the National Popular Vote by 13.79% against Roosevelt and 25.02% ahead of President Wilson when he was elected, It was really no surprise that he became the poster child of the Republican Party instead of Roosevelt. In a shock that he didn't expect, he was elected with 63.44% of the Vote to be Knoxville's Congressional Representative. Though he disliked the idea somewhat,, he agreed to join Congress. The reason for this is, what many believe, a Write-in campaign by those from the Congressional District he lived in to elect him. He fought Wilson throughout his first 12 month in office with both becoming giant rivals against one another. Adenauer had continued to gather attention as the man who could get things done and fought for a more United Country while serving the interests of his congressional district first.

On February 9th, 1914, he and Former President Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech in New York City that was to be broadcasted across the country for the Eagle and Progressive Parties to stop being separate from the Republican Party and instead rejoin the Republican Party to help in the fight against President Wilson. The Entire Eagle Party and much of the Progressive Party followed the requests, though there were a handful of stragglers from the Progressive Party. With that out of the way, Conrad then set his eyes on the Senate.

Incumbent Senator Newell Sanders announced that he would retire in 1915 and that meant his seat would be up for grabs. Conrad, already a household name in Tennessee, focused on the rural and urban areas of Tennessee and mainly relied on bringing back his Governor Coalition back to help him win. His opponent, a Teacher by the name of William R. Webb wasn't much of a challenge. He would win with 66.77% of the vote to Webb's 32.22% of the vote and would thus become the Junior Senator from Tennessee, with his Successor as Governor being the Senior Senator.

1914 United States Special Senate Election in Tennessee

After having been elected to the Senate, he was the new leader as he challenged the ideas of Wilson. He stated that the Federal Reserve System, which replaced the Central Bank which had been functioning since President James Polk created it in 1846, vastly expanded the reserve system's power and outreach, with the idea of a future panic happening in the future due to it being created. This was followed by his criticism of the Federal Trade Commission, stating that it stopped trust-busting of certain monopolies by categorizing them in particular ways, such as Utility companies.

He had also used the Jim Crow-ing of the Federal Workforce, with blacks and whites being kept separate. Wilson, quite despondent with reality and incredulously racist himself, believed that this idea was a part of his new Liberalism. By making Race Relations "better", in his own eyes, blacks were being liberated. In reality, however, it diminished their opportunities significantly and in one of the places they used to be able to expect relatively equal opportunity and employment. Conrad would also bring up the screening of the highly racist, Klan Propaganda film "The Birth of a Nation" {Not to be confused with the 2018 Film of the same name}, which discreetly quoted him at the beginning, at the White House. By screening it there, a first in Presidential History, in the eyes of Conrad, he legitimized the movie (his quote "It is like writing history with lightning and my only regret is that it is all so terribly true" upon watching the film made many people gag in disgust) and said that the Ku Klux Klan, an old enemy of Adenauer's came into being again because of the Movie and Wilson's support of it.

Finally, Conrad questioned the Graduated Income Tax System that Wilson had put in place that saw Tariffs be brought down to Historic lows. He stated that the idea would cripple businesses and weaken the Economy for the future until nothing could be changed. He would lastly call Wilson a Centralist who only wanted to see the expansion of the Federal Government over the States, which Adenauer had no support for whatsoever, stating that he was trying to remove the Government's checks and balances to focus it on a leader. such as Wilson himself.

In one final way, Conrad would also criticize Wilson's interventions into multiple countries, such as the Philippines and Mexico, both of which Conrad believed should choose their own destinies. This idea combined old isolationism and combined it with a new form of Imperialism. Despite America being tired of colonialism, Wilson wanted to impose a new form of Imperialism, so a new form of American Exceptionalism turned into "Fighting to make the World safe for Democracy". The problem was, it was Fighting for Democracy elsewhere. The beginnings of this were his policies towards Latin America. Wilson had inherited several wars, of which were the dwindling Philippine Insurrection, Nicaraugan Occupation (which Wilson had used as an example for further wars).

Him calling Wilson an imperialist, interventionist, racist, scum of a President allowed his high popularity to grow even further across the Country, and especially with isolationists and African Americans who disliked Wilson, though in secret, Conrad Adenauer supported his Parents' home country of Germany in the Great War and even said to a friend, Warren G. Harding, "God help Germany, for if they don't win, something terrible might happen." Adenauer knew his popularity was massive and on December 9th, 1915, he announced his candidacy for President a Third Time, stating in his Announcement Speech "This is my third time and let it be known this will be my final time, running for President. If I lose, the People have spoken and I will retire any Presidential Ambitions of mine." He followed that up by saying that the Republican Party needed Reformation and that Wilson as President would be the death of the United States. He was the obvious front-runner and it was doubtful anyone would dare challenge him, though Businessman Henry Ford of Michigan and Former President Theodore Roosevelt did just that.

Despite there being some hopes to stop him, Roosevelt won the key primaries in the states on Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming, which gave him the lead in Delegates going into the Convention, with Roosevelt having won New York, his home state, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, and California while Ford only won in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. At the Convention, with almost unchallenged support, he won every states delegation except in Washington, Nevada, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, and the states he had lost in the primaries. He chose Former Senator Theodore E. Burton of Ohio as his running mate and together, they made a powerful group. With Roosevelt and every well known Progressive and Eagle Politician endorsing him, the party was clearly united around Adenauer and Burton and they went on to have a big lead against Wilson in the General Election.

1916: Adenauer/Burton: A New America Awaits!

President Wilson and Vice President Marshall were both easily renominated by the Democrats. With them having a good approval, re-election looked like a shoe-in, though against Adenauer, who was considered the most liked Politician in America at the time, it would get tougher. When news broke out of that the HMS Lusitania, a supposedly peaceful ship that was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915, was carrying arms and munitions bound for Britain, Public Opinion turned against Wilson's favored choice of Britain and began to favor Germany a little more. When it was revealed that Wilson had secretly lifted sanctions on loaning money to Nations at war in 1915 after the sinking of the Lusitania and the attempt by Wilson to drive Public Interest into joining WW1 before he was running for re-election, this lead to a basic collapse of his campaign with Adenauer naming him Warhawk Wilson due to the very reasons mentioned above.

The 1916 Race was a blow-out as Adenauer campaigned in the states that Wilson had won but only barely and spoke on his efforts. He would Challenge Wilson to a Debate while giving a speech in St. Louis, Missouri and Wilson accepted it, despite having a stroke two weeks prior. They both agreed to have the Debate in Yorktown, Virginia, the birth state of Wilson, on November 3rd, two days before Election Day. Wilson had tried to use all arguments about how successful his presidency was while Adenauer countered and reminded all listeners about how Wilson was not good for the United States and it's isolationism. A Famous tidbit was recorded in this exact format here:

Wilson: "My Presidency has been rather successful, with the United States having even better Race Relations than in many year-"

Adenauer: "Mr. President, if I may, what specifically have you done? How does bringing Jim Crow to the Federal Government help race relations? How does you sending Loans to the entente help keep us neutral? How does fighting for Democracy mean invading every country that has a different idea than you?"

Wilson: "Senator, your accusations are frankly abhorrent. I have bee a fighter for-"

Adenauer: "Mr. President, I am only stating facts. Facts that are very much known to the public. I guess my accusations are rather abhorrent when they don't align by your narratives and I must remind of the quote you said years ago about myself after I made sure African Americans had better rights in my state of Tennessee: ""A Dictator that has no real reason to be Governor" I ask you, are his ideas great if mine are very much more abhorrent than Wilson's, people of America?"

Following the debate, it was finished and Wilson began to prepare for a defeat, though some stated that he still had a chance. The day after the debate, in which Wilson was thoroughly crushed, a small Canadian patrol of 32 troops massacred 12 US citizens just at the border with them being accused of crossing the border to gather intelligence on Canada for the US. Canada's mother country of England supported them and stated that they were in the right, turning public opinion largely against the Entente, mainly Canada and Great Britain. Despite heroic attempts from Wilson, he only remained good standing in the deep south and even there, winning wasn't assured as even his birth state of Virginia was guaranteed for him, nor was his home state of New Jersey. Adenauer would campaign across states that bordered or were close to Canada and rallied support against the Entente while also stating that the time for action was near and Wilson was supporting the very people that had attacked America.

Just a few hours before the first polls closed, Adenauer gave a speech in Hartford, Connecticut in which he stated that the United States had a new enemy and that he would fight against and help keep America from falling into the pit of Darkness that President Wilson was trying to lead them into. Wilson focused his efforts in mainly the deep South and Virginia, essentially giving up the rest of the country to Adenauer, who had a big chance at winning due to all of his connections. When the first polls closed at 8:30 PM in the East, it was clear that the United States would have a quick Election Night and the Winner would be quickly decided.

1916 ELECTION NIGHT PT II

10:45 PM

"It's 10:45 PM in the East and we can make 8 Projections. In the States of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota will go to Adenauer while President Wilson wins just the State of Texas. With Wilson rather unpopular in the West, his chances at gaining more Electoral Votes than the ones he has as of now his tiny while for Adenauer, he still has 52 Electoral Votes to gain. Adenauer now sits at 395 to Wilson's 84."

"It's 11:30 PM in the East and we can project that the states of Oklahoma and New Mexico will go to Senator Adenauer, bringing him to 408 Electoral Votes. The Polls have just closed in Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Remember, Adenauer won Idaho in 1912 but Debs won Nevada and Arizona back then too, so those two states might be for Wilson's play. Also, in the Popular Vote, it's very clear who is leading who with Adenauer cleaning house."

"It's 11:45 PM in the East and despite some beliefs, Adenauer wins the states of Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona with little contest. This brings him to 422 Electoral Votes. Wilson's last hope is the state of Oregon to gain at least one state in the West, but Adenauer has kept all pacific states under a tight lease and will not let go."

"It's 12:45 AM in the East in the Early Morning Hours of November 6th, 1916 and we can project that California, Washington, AND Oregon will all go to Adenauer in a complete set, sealing him at 447 Electoral Votes. As he leads President Wilson by 6,500,000 Votes in the National Popular Vote, the for the Democrats is where to go from now that they lost in such a big disaster. At the same timke, the combination of Adenauer's popularity, the revelations of Wilson's Presidency, and Wilson's actions in supporting the Entente most likely cost the Election, as well as the Debate a few days ago."

I’m happy kind of? I wonder how U.S involvement on Germany’s behalf (or being neutral) will affect the war, and how an Adenauer Administration would look like. Maybe Wilson tries to pull off a Cleveland? Idk. Great timeline though.

at this point in time, due the killing of the civilians and GB not apologizing, the US has bloodlust and it's venom set on striking the Entente, so neutrality is out. The Adenauer administration would be pro-business, pro-tariff, anti-taxes, pro-german. Finally, Wilson was prone to strokes IOTL and is that ITTL so while he'll try to be GC, his strokes will make sure he can't. (He tried to run for a third time in 1920 IOTL but a stroke made him sit the election out)

laughing a bit at this but in all reality, Conrad would stick by the two term rule set by Washington. Only one who might leave it is a secret president for now but you will find that interesting.
