What's the criteria to be part of the G7/G8/G6/G# ?

It can't just be the most developed nations, or the list would be longer with more small European countries and more Asian countries and some Pacific countries and maybe a few more American countries.

It's basically like being part of the bitchy rich kids clique in school.

The criteria is a consensus among the existing members to admit a new member.

Seems like it's currently made up of large/largish nations with high per capital GDP's.  In that context Russia doesn't really fit as it's more of a higher end middle income country.  The next nations on the list would be South Korea, Spain, and Australia.

Russia was added as a reward, but was a terrible fit. The best next choice would almost certainly be China.

Why would China be the best fit?  It's not a democracy like the other nations in the G7 and it's per capita GDP, at this point, is still well below Russia's.

Russia also wasn’t a democracy, and China is the worlds largest economy, and has a developed economy in large parts of the country.

Russia was viewed as a new democracy in the 1990's and early 2000's and is still nominally a democracy even if the reality is more complex.  China doesn't even really make a pretense.
